"Children’s science-related identities and ideas, whether scientifically accurate or not, are deeply grounded in their personal experience of the world and that it is productive to leverage them as they learn. The Next Generation Science Standards calls for educators to build on these assets whenever possible. The Geo-Inquiry Process does this by showing students how relevant science is to the local issues they care about."

#NatGeoCertified educator and university professor Jim McDonald shares how teachers can combine science and geography for better science learning by using the Geo-Inquiry Process.

Curious how you might get started? Here are Jim's suggestions to generate topics of interest:

🦊 Create an interest board. This can be a physical bulletin board in the classroom or an online platform. Students can add newspaper clippings, web links, images, or brief write-ups.

🌊 If possible, invite community speakers into the classroom (in-person or virtually) to discuss areas of interest.

🌍 Have students take photographs in their community and use these as prompts to identify issues or topics.

🦈 Discuss issues important to students, such as specific social and environmental issues, and look for reflections locally.

🌱 Have students read about explorers and their projects and identify the Geo-Inquiry Questions on which the projects are based.

Leverage these tips from educator Jim McDonald and learn more about how our #GeoInquiry Process can help your students develop the skills, knowledge & tools of a #geographer in our online course "Connecting the Geo-Inquiry Process to Your Teaching Practice."

National Geographic Education resources are indeed interdisciplinary; all subjects are included with real-life examples to explore and understand the world around us.

“National Geographic Education resources really resonate with my students when they see the actual application. Take, for example, surface tension. When I’m talking about hydrogen bonds and molecules, you can see their blank eyes as they don’t really understand what I’m saying. But then I go to the National Geographic archives and pull photos of sharks about to come out of the water or a video of lizards running on water and they see it, that’s surface tension. They are like, “Oh, I can see that. Now that makes sense.” When you have a resource from National Geographic and you can provide the foundation and make it more relevant and applicable, that’s wonderful.

Don’t be afraid of exploring. Yes, you do have a curriculum you have to follow, but go with an explorer mindset. If you can engage them and give them the skills, the knowledge will follow. If they’re curious, this is not the time to question whether or not it is meeting expectations and curriculum guidelines. This is the time to learn something new with your kids and learn what your kids really like — that is surprising sometimes! Don’t be afraid of exploring, don’t be afraid of failing.”

- Middle school science teacher Emilia Odife of Orlando, Florida
