A child should never be defined by the circumstances of their mother. ❤️
We were honoured to welcome Hon. Navarre Marie, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, to our Early Childhood Centre at the Beau Bassin Women’s Prison.
For the past 12 years, this unique project has been giving children whose mothers are in prison the opportunity to remain with them and benefit from early childhood care and development until the age of 5.
More than 100 children have already benefited from this service.
What makes this centre truly special is not only its location, but the way it brings children together.
Here, children of incarcerated mothers, children from vulnerable families in the surrounding community, and children of prison officers share the same environment, play together, learn together and build friendships — without barriers, without labels and without being treated differently.
They are simply children. 🌈
A child does not see a prison, a uniform or a social status. A child sees another child to play with, laugh with and learn from.
This is the heart of our work: creating spaces where children can experience belonging, dignity, inclusion and normality, regardless of the circumstances into which they were born.
We are proud of the journey of this centre and grateful to everyone who has contributed to making it possible over the past 12 years.
Because every child deserves to grow, learn and dream — and no child should carry the weight of an adult's circumstances. 💚
