This honour recognises Prof. Pace’s outstanding lifelong contribution to Education for Sustainable Development — a field in which he has been a tireless advocate, mentor and visionary. His work has inspired generations of educators and students to embrace sustainability as a core value for Malta and beyond.

Celebrating the GLOBE Water Wise Project 2025-2026

This year, nine schools across Gozo took part in the project, engaging students from primary, secondary and post-secondary schools, in hands-on, STEM-based learning focused on protecting one of our most precious resources: water. Through real-world science, students monitored weather and rainfall, applied GLOBE Atmosphere and Hydrosphere protocols, explored national water infrastructure, and designed water-saving solutions for their schools and communities.

GLOBE student voices were at the heart of today’s celebration. We were proud to hear inspiring presentations from:

Their work showed curiosity, responsibility, and a strong commitment to sustainability, exactly what GLOBE is all about.

A key highlight of the event was the presentation of the STEAM & Sustainability Award, celebrating schools’ ongoing commitment to STEAM education and environmental responsibility.

The awards were presented by Ms Maria Elena Despott, Head of the European Commission Representation in Malta who also shared words of praise for the outstanding work being carried out in schools through The GLOBE Program

The trophy was designed by Ms Ramona Mercieca, GLOBE Malta Deputy Coordinator, and funded by EUROPE DIRECT Gozo.

Special thanks go to Mr Jesmond Buttigieg, Manager of Europe Direct Gozo and Mr Daniel Borg, CEO of The Gozo Business Chamber for believing in GLOBE Malta and for their continued support.

GLOBE Malta Air Quality Campaign – Closing Event

Today, GLOBE Malta marked the closing of its fourth year of the Air Quality Campaign, celebrating the hard work and commitment of students and educators at the STEM & VET Curriculum Hub in Pembroke.

What started as a pilot project with just two schools has grown into an annual scientific environmental campaign, with 15 schools from Malta and Gozo participating this year.

The event included a presentation by Ms Ramona Mercieca, GLOBE Malta Deputy Coordinator, highlighting the campaign’s objectives, activities and key outcomes.

Students then took centre stage, sharing their experiences, data findings and actions taken within their schools and communities, followed by an informative presentation by the ERA - Environment & Resources Authority on air quality and its local relevance.

The event concluded with the presentation of certificates to participating schools, celebrating students’ commitment to scientific inquiry and advocacy for cleaner air.

Thank you to all students, educators and partners who have contributed to the continued growth and success of the GLOBE Malta Air Quality Campaign.

Learning beyond the classroom, where curiosity meets the outdoors 🌍

For the second consecutive year, Year 4 and Year 6 students attending Gozo College Xagħra Primary enjoyed an enriching hands‑on learning experience at Ramla Bay guided by GLOBE Malta deputy coordinator, Ramona Mercieca in collaboration with Xagħra Local Council

The students:
☀️ observed and measured different weather parameters
🏖️ explored fascinating facts about Ramla’s unique coastal habitat
🔍 sharpened their observation skills through a fun scavenger hunt
🗑️ participated in a beach clean‑up
🌊 learned about the harmful effects of litter on our marine environment

Experiences like these help students connect with nature, understand their environment and become responsible young citizens who care about their surroundings.

Well done to Xagħra Local Council for organising this event and to Nature Trust - FEE Malta - Gozo Section for providing the necessary equipment for the clean-up.
