It was a truly memorable and historic occasion on Saturday last in Dublin. I was deeply honoured to be in attendance at St. Patrick's Cathedral for the final official function of President Michael D. Higgins.
For me, it was a particularly poignant moment. There has been a lot of water under the bridge since he was my tutor all those years ago at UCG or University of Galway as it is now known. To reflect on his incredible journey from the lecture hall to the highest office in the land gave me pause for thought on how quickly the last 40 yers have moved.
It was a fitting event, marking the end of a significant chapter in Irish public life. The dedication shown by President Higgins throughout his term has to my mind left an indelible mark on our country.
As he and his wife, Sabina, begin their well-deserved retirement, I want to extend my warmest wishes to them both for a future filled with good health, happiness, and peace.
