They’ve been working behind the scenes for months, bringing together ideas, research, creativity and different perspectives. Now, it’s finally time to introduce them!

Meet the research team behind NEW NAR – New Narrative Action Research (https://lnkd.in/dQdJ7f6s), funded by Xjenza Malta, our project exploring how we can contribute to reshaping around through , , podcasts and immersive experiences.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll introduce the people behind the research, their expertise and the different perspectives they bring to NEW NAR.

Meet the GMD Research Team 🌍 — Denitsa Markova

Denitsa is a researcher on the New Narrative Action (New NAR) project, working with the team to challenge the dominant narratives that frame migration as a crisis or a burden — and to open space for new ones. Not through sweeping change, she says, but by questioning the assumptions we hold ourselves.

Alongside her research, Denitsa is a PhD student at the University of Malta, exploring the intersection of asylum linked to forced migration and asylum tied to psychiatric institutions — a path shaped by her own experience as a social worker in reception centres across Europe and now in a psychiatric hospital in Malta.

She loves trains, goats, quiet moments, mountains, and mysteries to contemplate. 🚂🐐

Yesterday, GMD held an internal meeting with staff, collaborators, and friends to share the first results of our Erasmus+ KA1 project Adaptive Learning Lab.

The project sends six GMD staff members to Vilnius, Lithuania, for a training course on the use of AI tools for inclusive teaching.

The three colleagues who took part in the first mobility Viviana Premazzi Federica Pettinato gave us a taste of what they experienced: they walked us through the tools they worked with, gave us the chance to try them firsthand, and opened up a conversation on the ethical implications of using AI in education. A rich and thought-provoking afternoon!

Connecting cultures, creating opportunities 🌍✨

For 2026, we look back at our journey with Erasmus+ and the impact it has created in Malta and beyond:

🚶 ORRAJT: 20+ Intercultural Learning Walks and 3 Official Intercultural Companions, still leading walks 3 years later

👩‍💼 360 WEE: 27 women from marginalised communities trained to build entrepreneurial skills

🎮 GAME: a digital video game co-created to promote new narratives on migration

🇮🇹 Last week, our team travelled to Milan for the 2nd Transnational Meeting of the Erasmus+ GAME project!

On 28 and 29 September, we met with our partners at We Are Muesli to finalise the last details of the GAME Co-Creation Lab and to map out the next steps of the project.

Two days of collaborative work, shared ideas, and a lot of excitement for what’s coming. 🙌

How do we recognise when it happens?

Why do so many experiences remain unreported?

And what can each of us do to change things?

In Malta, as elsewhere, Islamophobia can take many forms: everyday comments and microaggressions, at work or in education, hostility online, and hate crime.

On Wednesday, 28 October at 6pm, GMD invites you to join us for an online conversation on how we can better recognise, report and challenge anti-Muslim discrimination.

Facilitated by GMD collaborator Nesrine Bourcheda this will not be a lecture, but an informal and participatory space for shared reflection and discussion, with particular attention to experiences and challenges in the Maltese context.

Because addressing Islamophobia is not only a Muslim issue.

It is about equality, human rights and the kind of communities we want to build together.

In collaboration we thrive:

Welcome to the team our new intern

Hello everyone!

I’m a curious and proactive person with a strong interest in , , and global media.

I’m currently completing my Master’s degree in Media, Languages, and Communication at the Università di Milano-Bicocca , where I’ve developed a deeper interest in the ways people from different cultures communicate and connect.

One of the most meaningful experiences in my academic journey was living, studying, and teaching in Kyoto, .

Being immersed in a completely different culture taught me a lot about adaptability, communication, and seeing things from different perspectives.

I’m particularly interested in creative communication and storytelling, and I enjoy learning through new experiences. I’m always open to new challenges and opportunities that allow me to grow, both personally and professionally.

I chose to do my internship at GMD Malta because I wanted to gain practical experience in an international environment where I could put my communication skills into practice. I was also interested in the opportunity to work with people from different cultural backgrounds and learn how communication works in a real professional context.

My biggest wish for the world is for cultural diversity to be seen as a strength rather than a barrier.

In an increasingly connected world, I think we need more open-minded and empathetic communication, because getting to know different cultures can help us break down stereotypes and understand each other better.

I hope for a future where everyone has the opportunity to experience different cultures and develop a broader perspective based on , , and collaboration.

Meet the GMD Research Team 🌍 —Laura Cappai

Laura is a junior researcher on the NewNAR team, working on new narratives around migration in Malta. Her research spans transnationalism, remittances, and labour migration policy — bringing together quantitative and qualitative methods to understand how people move, and how they stay connected to where they came from.

She’s been with GMD since 2023, contributing to the ORRAJIT project and research on emotional transnationalism, and is currently completing a Master’s in Migration, Ethnic Relations and Multiculturalism at Utrecht University.

When she’s not researching, you’ll find her biking, volunteering at a children’s farm, or playing the violin. 🚲🎻
