Generative AI accelerates writing, but what happens to the writer’s voice?

A grounded study at the University of Malta compared Humanities students’ writing with and without an LLM.

The findings point to more reflection and editing, alongside reduced lexical variety, the loss of hedging and a shift from personal stance to impersonal certainty.

For higher education, the implication is a need to cultivate creativity and narrative skill, not only efficient output.

Generative AI now appears in memos, submitted assignments and institutional policies, yet it is seldom understood as the precise technical process it is.

In his latest piece for 3CL, Marvin Starominski-Uehara addresses this through a single running image: Einstein standing in front of you. Through it, he sets out four building blocks that explain why two people using an identical model can obtain very different value from it:

1.⁠ ⁠Capacity: the ceiling set by what a model was trained on, which no question can raise.
2.⁠ ⁠Entropy: the “dial” (temperature) governing how far a model strays from its most predictable answer.
3.⁠ ⁠Conditioning: how precisely a question specifies constraints and concepts, and therefore which answers it draws out.
4.⁠ ⁠Judgement: the expertise required to recognise a sharp answer and to catch a subtly wrong one.

The implication for education and professional practice is that the productive question is not whether something was AI-generated, but whether the user understands what the tool is doing and is equipped to evaluate what it returns.

Everyone can talk to Einstein now. Not everyone hears the same Einstein back.
