ππΆ Another Scholastic Year Has Begunβ¦ But Are We Rethinking How Children Learn?
As another scholastic year begins, children return to their classrooms, teachers prepare new learning experiences, and families settle into their daily routines. It is also an opportunity to reflect on education and how we can continue improving it for future generations.
At CoMusArts Malta, we believe education should go beyond textbooks, examinations and academic achievement. Every child is different, and learning should provide opportunities to explore, experiment, create and develop practical and social skills. Such as:
π Early-years education should encourage storytelling, play, movement, music and exploration, helping children develop naturally while gradually introducing more structured learning.
π¨βπ©βπ§ Homework and parental involvement should support children's learning without placing unnecessary teaching responsibilities on families.
π οΈ Practical and creative education should be available to all students, including opportunities in music, art, drama, woodwork, DIY and everyday life skills.
π Inclusion and wellbeing should remain central, recognising that children have different abilities, interests and learning needs.
π€ Schools and community organisations could work more closely together to offer accessible non-formal educational experiences, including after-school activities.
π Performances, exhibitions and showcases can give children opportunities to share their achievements, develop confidence and celebrate their progress.
As CoMusArts Malta, we hope to contribute to this vision by developing meaningful music and creative learning opportunities that complement formal education, encourage collaboration and allow more children to discover their potential. We recognise the dedication of educators, families and organisations already contributing to children's development. Our aim is to build upon these efforts through constructive discussion, cooperation and new opportunities.
π Education is not only about preparing children for examinations. It is also about preparing them for life.
