Join us for “Reviving Malta’s Industrial Legacy: The Ħamrun Central Railway Station Project” with Perit Andrè Mangion.

Don't miss out on tomorrow's 15 min lecture as to why we should not demolish our buildings

In the third installment of ICOMOS Malta's Lunchtime Lecture Series, Perit Sephora Schembri will be discussing "Materiality and Embidied Energy in Conservation".

Malta has been experiencing an ongoing construction boom which has increased the magnitude of demolition waste. Considering also the climate crisis, preserving existing materials needs to be included in a more sustainable model, while recognising the environmental value of building materials. One of the main aims of this research was to start a conversation on the embodied energy and carbon within the conservation practice.

Join us on Wednesday 03/12 at 12:00 in person at the Faculty of the Built Environment Hall Ben A or remotely on: https://universityofmalta.zoom.us/j/98817860148

See you there!

ICOMOS Malta is launching a series of short lunchtime lectures that explore fascinating issues around heritage assets. Each talk will focus on a different theme, from the challenges of working with historic sites to the creative possibilities of architectural interventions. The first one will be held on Wednesday 8th October at noon BEN A

These sessions are designed to be informal, engaging, and open to everyone—an opportunity to learn, share ideas, and spark discussions across our academic and professional community. The aim is to meet regularly each month and build an ongoing conversation around heritage and architecture.

Bring your curiosity and join us in shaping these discussions.

🎓 Master of Conservation at the University of Malta - Highlights of the Academic Year 2024-2025 #1

Our Master of Conservation is approaching its second year (2025-2026) but let’s go through some highlights of the year that has just passed!

In March, Dr Chiara Pasian (University of Gothenburg ) was back to Malta to deliver a dynamic and insightful workshop Injection grouting for delaminated wall paintings: approach, design, challenges to our students of the Master of Conservation.
The workshop featured lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities, providing our students an excellent opportunity to learn one of the most challenging conservation treatments for wall paintings.
A huge thank you to Dr Pasian and to the Erasmus mobility exchange programme to have made this workshop possible!

🥼 Last week, first-year students of the Master of Conservation (Easel Paintings) programme participated in a week-long Lining Workshop led by Dr Antonio Iaccarino Idelson. The workshop featured demonstrations by Dr Iaccarino Idelson, theoretical lectures on traditional and contemporary lining methods for canvas paintings, and hands-on practical sessions, all of which sparked insightful discussions. Students explored and compared these methods through various exercises, including peel tests on mock-ups created during the workshop.

🖌️ This experience also allowed students to collaborate with Heritage Malta paintings conservators, with whom they have been working during their lectures throughout the current and previous academic years at the Paintings and Polychrome Sculpture Conservation Lab in Kalkara.
