Last week, our Head of Department, Dr Claudine Borg, attended the European Master’s in Translation (EMT) Network Meeting at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland.
The event brought together over 150 delegates from across Europe to discuss the future of translation and multilingualism in Europe, providing a valuable platform for the exchange of ideas and best practices among academics, professionals, and policymakers.
The programme explored the rapidly evolving landscape of translation education and professional practice, with discussions focusing on language rights, accessibility, multilingual communication, and the challenges and opportunities presented by digital transformation.
Participation in events such as the EMT Network Meeting enables our Department to remain actively engaged with developments in the field and to contribute to ongoing discussions shaping the future of translation and multilingual communication in Europe.

Last week the Master in Interpreting Studies students, Tyler-Luke, Leanne and Maria Christina, joined forces with former student and EU-accredited interpreter Amy at the Annual Book Conference, where they interpreted from Maltese into English.
The Department of Translation, Terminology and Interpreting Studies thanks the National Book Council for highlighting the importance of interpretation. All local speakers at the conference were able to share their insights in Maltese, while foreign guests and speakers were given access to all contributions through the English interpretation.
This was an important step in promoting the Maltese language and the value of interpretation in our multilingual society.
Kudos to the interpreters for their excellent work and stamina!

And that’s a wrap for the Audiovisual Translation specialisation! It has been an incredible journey with a multilingual and multicultural student cohort that engaged in intensive lectures, hands-on practical sessions, various tools and platforms, multiple AVT and accessibility modalities, a museum accessibility project, and a study trip abroad! The experience also included a lot of fun while building meaningful connections.
Special thanks to Dr. Elizabeth Birk and Dr. Nan Hu for their invaluable support as language advisors. Featuring our students Paula Tkaczyk, Svetlana Borg, Ming Hu, and Anna Fischel, with AVT coordination & teaching by Dr. Giselle Spiteri Miggiani.
