On the 27th January 2026, the Department of Statistics was proud to be represented by Dr. Monique Borg Inguanez at the St Aloysius College Sixth Form University Orientation Visits.
Dr. Borg Inguanez introduced students to the fascinating fields of Statistics and Operations Research, explaining how these disciplines help us understand uncertainty, optimize decisions, and solve real-world problems. She also outlined the courses offered by the department, and shared examples of the diverse career paths available to graduatesโ€”from data science and analytics to roles in finance, healthcare, and government.

Weโ€™re delighted to support students as they explore their future studies, and we thank St Aloysius College for the invitation!

The Department of Statistics and Operations Research is pleased to announce a talk by Professor Suresh Sethi from the University of Texas at Dallas.

Title: Hierarchical and Mixed Leadership Games for Dynamic Supply Chains: Applications to Cost Learning and Co-op Advertising

Date: Tuesday 11 November 2025

Time: 10:00 - 12:00

Venue: MP 405

Abstract:

We consider two applications of dynamic stochastic supply chains.

The first application is a decentralised two-period supply chain in which a manufacturer produces a product with cost learning benefits and sells it through a retailer facing price-dependent demand. The manufacturerโ€™s second-period production cost declines linearly in the first-period production, but with a random learning rate. The manufacturer may or may not have the inventory carryover option. We formulate the problem as a two-period Stackelberg game and obtain its feedback equilibrium solutions explicitly. We then examine the impact of the mean learning rate and learning rate variability on channel members' pricing strategies, the manufacturerโ€™s production decisions, and the retailerโ€™s procurement decisions. We show that as the mean learning rate or the learning rate variability increases, the traditional double marginalisation problem becomes more severe, leading to greater efficiency loss in the channel. We obtain revenue-sharing contracts that can coordinate the dynamic supply chain.

The second application studies a novel manufacturer-retailer cooperative advertising game where, in addition to the traditional setup into which the manufacturer subsidises the retailer's advertising effort, we also allow the reverse support from the retailer to the manufacturer. This is modelled as a mixed leadership game in which one player is a leader on some decisions and a follower on other decisions. We find an equilibrium that can be expressed by a solution of a set of algebraic equations. We then conduct an extensive numerical study to assess the impact of model parameters on the equilibrium.
