Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies MEDAC - University of Malta

MEDAC was established in 1990 pursuant to an agreement between the governments of Malta and Switzerland.

The Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) is an institution of higher learning offering advanced degrees in diplomacy and conflict resolution with a focus on Mediterranean issues. Since then, the Academy's main supporters have been the Swiss Agency for Development and Co-operation (SDC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malta. The Geneva Graduate Institute of International and D

evelopment Studies (HEID) was among MEDAC's first foreign partners. In 2009, MEDAC concluded an agreement with the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the Foreign Office, in turn represented by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and established a German Chair in Peace Studies and Conflict Prevention. Since its inception thirty years ago MEDAC has acquired a solid reputation both as an academic institution and as a practical training platform. We are fortunate to count over 800 alumni from over 60 different countries who have completed successfully the post-graduate courses offered by the Academy.

MEDAC was honoured to welcome H. E. Mrs. Regina Appiah-Sam, High Commissioner of the Republic of Ghana in Malta. The visit to the Academy provided an opportunity to exchange ideas about enhancing academic cooperation between MEDAC and Ghana.

President Emeritus Dr. George Vella, Chairman of MEDAC and Professor Stephen Calleya, Director of MEDAC, were honored to welcome H.E Meshal Almodaf, Ambassador of the State of Kuwait.

The visit to the Academy provided an opportunity to explore numerous avenues of academic cooperation and exchange views on current developments in the Middle East and Mediterranean.

The Regional Program Political Dialogue and Regional Integration South Mediterranean of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS PolDiMed) organized an enriching study visit for MEDAC's Master of Diplomacy students, in collaboration with KAS regional offices in Geneva, Brussels and Vienna. Through this dynamic multilateral initiative, MEDAC students benefited from invaluable insights and learned firsthand from high-level interactions with key representatives at the Vienna Diplomatic Academy, the European Commission, NATO, OSCE, OPEC and the United Nations. MEDAC expresses its sincere gratitude to KAS for coordinating such an academically rewarding programme.

MEDAC Master of Diplomacy students participated in an academic study visit to Berlin in April 2026. The itinerary featured several high-level engagements including visits to the German Federal Foreign Office, the Embassy of Malta, and the Centre for International Peace Operations (ZIF). This enriching experience was made possible through the cooperation of the Embassy of Germany in Malta and the generous support of the German Chair in Peace Studies and Conflict Prevention at MEDAC.

MEDAC was honoured to welcome H.E. Barkın Kayaoğlu, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Malta. The Ambassador engaged in a dynamic exchange of views on contemporary international relations with MEDAC Chairman President Emeritus Dr George Vella and MEDAC Director Professor Stephen Calleya. This discussion focused on initiatives to further strengthen the long-standing cooperation between the respective entities.
