MEDAC was established in 1990 pursuant to an agreement between the governments of Malta and Switzerland.

The Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) is an institution of higher learning offering advanced degrees in diplomacy and conflict resolution with a focus on Mediterranean issues. MEDAC Master of Diplomacy students participated in an academic study visit to Berlin in April 2026. The itinerary featured several high-level engagements including visits to the German Federal Foreign Office, the Embassy of Malta, and the Centre for International Peace Operations (ZIF). This enriching experience was made possible through the cooperation of the Embassy of Germany in Malta and the generous support of the German Chair in Peace Studies and Conflict Prevention at MEDAC.

MEDAC was honoured to welcome H.E. Barkın Kayaoğlu, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Malta. The Ambassador engaged in a dynamic exchange of views on contemporary international relations with MEDAC Chairman President Emeritus Dr George Vella and MEDAC Director Professor Stephen Calleya. This discussion focused on initiatives to further strengthen the long-standing cooperation between the respective entities.

MEDAC expresses its sincere gratitude to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism for the opportunity provided to MEDAC students to engage in an enriching discussion with MFT officials. During the session, MEDAC Alumnus Mr David Mansfield, Director-General for Political, External Relations, and European Affairs delivered a comprehensive review of Malta’s foreign policy towards the Mediterranean and Gulf regions. Ms Gabrielle Caligari Conti, Assistant Director for Transnational Threats and Sanctions led an insightful discussion on Malta’s role and engagement in the sphere of international sanctions. MEDAC extends its appreciation to Mr Mansfield and Ms Caligari Conti for sharing their expertise, and to Ms Mary McNamara and Mr Jacob Callus for facilitating this rewarding experience.

MEDAC staff and students were honoured to visit the Embassy of China in Malta. During this visit, MEDAC students had the unique opportunity to engage in an insightful discussion with H.E. Zhang Zuo, Ambassador of China to Malta, on 'Building China and Malta into a Model of International Relations Characterized by Equality between Countries of Different Sizes'. Beyond this exchange, the visit featured a showcase of Chinese heritage including traditional clothing and music, the art of Chinese brush painting and a performance of traditional dance and the Chinese art of face-changing. MEDAC expresses its sincere gratitude to Ambassador Zhang Zuo and the Embassy of China in Malta for this enrichening experience.
