Pulse Social Democratic Students of Malta was founded on 19th March, 1997, with the purpose of being an active organisation representing students all over the islands. Abela Junior College and the University of Malta, Pulse started fielding candidates for the students’ council elections, with a successful result and a notable track-record, especially in KSJC: the Junior College students’ council.

In 2012, Pulse continued on its mission to expand its representation, becoming the first-ever recognised student society in MCAST, and therefore increasing its reach to all College campuses in Malta and Gozo. This was followed by recognition as the first-ever political student representation in the Gozo Sixth Form. In December 2013, Pulse obtained an absolute majority of votes and seats in KSM: the MCAST Students’ Council, together with the highest-ever turnout recorded in the Council’s history. Throughout the years, Pulse’s active role in student activism led to active debate and a professional attitude towards student representation. Throughout the years, Pulse voiced students’ concerns on matters such as stipends availability, public transportation issues, as well as numerous educational affairs. The latter included the campaign with regards to the ‘Legal Studies’ subject at post-secondary level, which Pulse initiated and successfully moved forward in summer 2013. In September 2013, Pulse opened its Economic Affairs Review Board which compiled and presented the first-ever pre-budget document reaction from a student organisation to Finance Minister Edward Scicluna. Pulse aims to continue expanding its representation in order to continue building on the work conducted so far. Furthermore, with clear aims for the future, the organisation will continue providing effective representation through clear policies and a student-centred agenda. Pulse Executive 2024/25

Over the past few days, students across Malta have been sitting for their MATSEC September Session examinations. Yesterday, students sitting for examinations at Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School were among those reportedly forced to endure high temperatures throughout their examinations, with some resorting to using whatever objects they had available to fan themselves in an attempt to cope with the heat. More concerningly, there have also been reports of students fainting while sitting for their September Session examinations.

Examinations already place considerable pressure on students, particularly during the September Session, which for some represents their final opportunity this year to obtain the results they need to continue their educational journey. Students should therefore be provided with an environment that allows them to concentrate and perform to the best of their abilities, without having to deal with excessive heat and inadequate classroom conditions.

The situation also raises a broader question: are our schools adequately equipped to provide students and educators with a suitable learning environment throughout the year? As Pulse, we encourage the Ministry for Education and all relevant authorities to invest the necessary resources and take the appropriate measures to ensure that such situations are not repeated in future examination sessions. Such an investment would serve a dual purpose, as it would improve the everyday learning environment for students and educators throughout the scholastic year, while also ensuring that classrooms used for MATSEC examinations provide adequate conditions during examination periods.

We recognise that installing and operating air-conditioning systems across every classroom may raise concerns regarding both cost and sustainability. However, these challenges should encourage investment in long-term solutions rather than sticking to minor improvements. One solution worth considering is greater investment in solar panels across school buildings. Making better use of available school rooftops to generate renewable energy could lessen the burden of the additional electricity demand associated with cooling classrooms, while simultaneously contributing towards Malta's transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy.

As Pulse, we strongly condemn the decision taken by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) to grant Hili Group permission to uproot hundreds of trees within the Comino Island, as well as to issue the necessary clearance for construction works to commence. Comino represents one of Malta’s most environmentally sensitive and treasured natural areas. As a natural island, its ecological integrity should be safeguarded with the highest level of scrutiny. Decisions which risk causing irreversible damage to the island’s natural environment cannot be taken lightly, particularly when Comino’s unique landscape and surrounding waters are enjoyed by thousands of Maltese residents and tourists every year.

We find it deeply concerning that the very Authority entrusted with protecting and defending Malta’s natural environment has approved a decision which risks significantly undermining the environment it is legally and institutionally responsible for safeguarding. Environmental protection must extend beyond words and commitments; it must be reflected in the decisions taken by the institutions responsible for enforcing it.

This decision is even more concerning when viewed in light of the commitments made during the general election just two months ago, when the party now in Government pledged that environmental protection would be placed among its top priorities. Such commitments must now be translated into concrete action.Pulse therefore calls upon the relevant authorities and the Government to reconsider this decision and ensure that the protection of Comino and its natural environment takes precedence over development interests.
