Deaf Awareness Month Week 2 – Hearing Aids: Turn the volume up!
This week we will delve into the journey of hearing aids starting from the ear trumpet in the 17th century till the Bluetooth devices we know today.
Thanks to many innovative creators such as Frederick C. Rein who invented the acoustic headbands in 1800 and Miller Reese Hutchison who invented the first electric hearing aid in 1892, people with hearing impairments have had the opportunity to integrate and communicate in a more efficient way with the world around them.
Technology has evolved from vacuum tubes which turned speech into electrical signals which were then amplified, to transistors which then replaced these tubes.
Furthermore, the appearance and position of these hearing aids also vary from being visible behind the ear to completely hidden in the ear canal as can be seen in the infographics below.
Keep tuning in every Thursday to show your support and spread the awareness

Deaf Awareness Month - Hearing loss, not as simple as you thought!
September is Deaf Awareness Month and for the first week, we will be tackling the different types of hearing loss.
The types of hearing loss range from mild to profound and are dependent on which part of the ear is affected be it the inner, middle, or outer ear. In addition to this, hearing loss also varies in presentation be it congenital or acquired, in one ear or in both and many more variations as can be seen in the following infographics.
Keep following along in the upcoming weeks to broaden your knowledge and help us raise awareness throughout the month of September!

SCOME - Practice Makes Perfect team once again collaborated with MMSA - Public Health - Healthy Lifestyles team for another successful BYOB x First Aid: By the Beach event. We would like to thank Malta Red Cross for delivering these informative sessions where students learnt about CPR, cardiac arrest and the use of the AED machine as well as bandaging techniques when administering first aid. The sessions were then followed by a beach workout organised by the Healthy Lifestyles team. We would like to thank all the participants for attending this successful event!
