🎶 So, what actually happens during a Music 4 Young Children session?

We play, move, listen, explore and make music! 🥁🎵

Through hands-on activities, children discover pulse, rhythm and pitch, learn to recognise and read musical rhythms, explore different instruments and develop their musical skills — all through play.

From our tiniest musicians 👶 to our older children, every session is designed around what they can understand, enjoy and achieve at their age.

Because children don’t just listen to music here…

They make it. 💕🎶

All of my students are special, and each one brings something unique to my teaching. Today, though, I want to celebrate one particular young musician and an achievement that means a great deal.

Some students remind us that progress isn't always about following the usual path—it's about finding the right one.

One of my students, who is on the autism spectrum, has just achieved a Distinction in the ABRSM Grade 1 Violin Performance Exam.

He found accessing traditional music notation difficult, so together we explored a different approach. Rather than using conventional notation, he reads a bespoke system based on colours and shapes that allows him to learn, understand and express music in a way that works for him.

It also took time to find the instrument that truly connected with him, but once we did, his progress and enjoyment of playing the violin really began to flourish.

Watching his confidence and musicianship grow has been a privilege. His determination, hard work and enthusiasm have been inspiring, and this Distinction is thoroughly deserved.

Moving forward, we are now gently working on transitioning away from the colour-based system to see whether traditional notation can also become accessible to him, at his own pace and with the right support. One may ask, “But you tried this before and it didn’t work—so why explore it again?” The answer is that learning is not always linear; sometimes understanding, readiness, and confidence develop over time, and what was once inaccessible can become possible with the right timing and approach.

Moments like this remind me that talent comes in many forms, and that when we are willing to adapt our teaching to meet students where they are, wonderful things can happen.

A very proud teacher today. 🎶⭐
