What are category B companies and why you should seek employment with them?
“I want a job that means something” ‘’ I want freedom and flexibility ‘’
‘’My life energy is worth more than just a paycheque’’ ‘‘I want a job that makes a difference’’
‘’I want to work in a company that actually cares ‘’
This generation is looking for of course a good paycheck but they want more from life, they also want work that matters and that provides them with personal quality of life from freedom, respect, flexibility, benefits to higher salaries.
When we think about doing work that matters, we think about the nonprofit organizations that are mission-driven but what if there is a new kind of business that balances profit and purpose and these are called category B Corporations.
Whatever your passion, there’s likely a B Corp that aligns with that interest.
In order to be a Certified B Corp, the organization must qualify in five sets of performance standards: governance, workers, community, customers, and environment.
They are for-profit hybrid businesses that combine entrepreneurship with a strong social mission. Their mission is still profit but while improving social and environmental conditions where they operate.
They must have the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.
For their employees, there is always dedication to employee experience from collective decision-making, to worker wellbeing committees, to regular employment satisfaction assessments, and even, in some cases, allocation of ownership shares with employees.
So people who work for B Corps are treated as vital contributors who have a say in how the organization operates.
Some of the benefits for employees
For example, salaries at B Corps are generally higher than the established market rate. B Corps also consistently offer above-average vacation and sick leave, retirement plans, flexible scheduling, and health insurance. In fact, many B Corps even extend these benefits to part-time and contract workers.
Some B Corps even create fun benefits for employees. For example: fly anywhere in the world, provided to employees after three years of work, paid holidays to provide employees three-day weekends in any month where there isn’t already a “real” holiday break, 5 percent of company-owned by non-executive employees, and pay bonuses to non-executives, Extend health benefits to part-time and flex-time employees.’’
But even more importantly this segment is opening the doors for a futuristic business world that is legally required to constantly make decisions by taking into consideration the impact they have on workers, suppliers, customers, the environment, and the community where they operate.
The bottom line is - Isn’t this the kind of business that anyone would want to work for, work with, buy from and invest in?
