Artificial Intelligence in Education: The Future Is in Our Hands!
On 14th October, the Institute for Education's CEO, Joanne Grima, was one of the guests on Popolin, aired on TVM and hosted by Quinton Scerri, for an engaging discussion on Artificial Intelligence, its opportunities and challenges, copyright considerations, and the responsibilities that come with its growing influence on education and society.
During the discussion, Joanne emphasised that our responsibility as educators is not simply to teach young people how to use AI, but first to equip them with the fundamental knowledge, skills and values needed to think critically, question, evaluate and make informed decisions about what AI produces.
This responsibility does not rest with teachers alone. Families, educators and society as a whole must work together to ensure that technology enhances human capabilities rather than replaces them.
A particularly important message was that we remain in control of how much responsibility we delegate to AI. We decide what to entrust to technology and what to retain as uniquely human. We risk making ourselves obsolete only when we allow technology to replace the very abilities we should continue to develop.
Above all, human relationships, love, empathy and genuine connection must never be neglected. We have a responsibility to nurture these in our children and young people so that artificial interactions never become a substitute for meaningful human relationships.
AI is here to stay. But it is up to us to decide how much it will impact our lives.
