The IfE recently hosted a seminar titled “Play as a Medium of Therapeutic Expression” delivered by Dr Claire Francica exploring how play serves as a child’s natural language of expression enabling children to communicate emotions, experiences, and inner conflicts through sandplay, art, role-play, and imaginative activities. Participants gained insight into the principles of play therapy, the symbolic meaning behind children’s play, and the evolving approaches that integrate both non-directive and directive therapeutic interventions, including family involvement.

Through case examples and a short film presentation on Sandplay Therapy, attendees were introduced to the powerful role of symbolism in bridging the unconscious to consciousness and supporting therapeutic growth in children.

We thank Dr Francica for sharing her expertise and for delivering a valuable and engaging professional learning experience for our participants.

The Institute for Education had the pleasure of hosting Professor Simon Thompson from University of Sussex for an enriching and reflective seminar titled “From Grading to Growing – How can we reframe Assessment as Learning to promote rather than measure progression?” whereby the concept of Assessment as Learning was explored, shifting the focus from assessment as a tool for measurement to a process that actively supports and drives student learning.

Professor Thompson shared valuable insights and practical perspectives on how learners can become more involved in their own assessment, using feedback, reflection, and self-regulation to foster deeper understanding and continuous growth. The seminar sparked rich discussion on how assessment practices can be reshaped to better promote meaningful progression, placing learners at the centre of the process.

This session forms part of the IFE’s ongoing series of professional development opportunities, which since the start of the academic year have been designed in response to feedback from those working within the sector.

We thank Professor Thompson and all participants for contributing to such a reflective and impactful session, and we look forward to continuing these important conversations in future events.
