Question 4
Decisive Ltd .undertakes jobs according to specifications issued by its customers. The company is currently considering proposals for two jobs, Aleph and Beth. Due to capacity constraints, the company can only accept to undertake one of these jobs. You have been requested by the company to cost these two jobs and assist it in selecting the job which it will perform.
Decisive Ltd has given you access to the following information.
1) The two jobs make use of some common materials. The expected material usage and the related prices for each job are as follows:

2) The supplier of Materials B and C charges a flat rate of €0.05 per litre delivered.
3) In the case of Beth, the company will need to sub-contract some processes in the job for which it does not have the required resources. The expected charge from the sub¬contractor is of €0.50 per litre of Material B and Material C used.
4) The company employs 20 skilled workers and 25 unskilled workers. The hourly cost of skilled labour is €12.00 per labour hour and that of the unskilled workers is of €8.00 per labour hour.
5) The estimated number of unskilled labour hours required on each job are: Aleph = 600; Beth = 1,000.
6) Aleph requires 45 minutes of skilled labour for every unskilled labour hour assigned to the job. Beth requires 60 minutes of skilled labour for every unskilled labour hour assigned to the job.
7) Production overheads are absorbed into production on the basis of labour hours. An absorption rate of €4.00 per labour hour used is taken.
8) Administration overheads for these jobs are budgeted at €2,500 for Aleph and €1,350 for Beth.
9) The company's policy is to provide for a mark-up of 25% on all jobs.
Required:
a) Calculate the total cost and selling price of Aleph and Beth. (18 marks)
b) Write a brief report giving your advice to the company as to which of the two jobs it should accept, and include your reasons for recommending such a choice. (6 marks)
