Flying gurnard

The most eye-catching feature of the Flying Gurnard is its pectoral fins, which can stretch out to nearly twice the width of its body. These fins are covered in bright, iridescent blue spots, making them truly a sight to behold

When threatened, the gurnard spreads these fins in a dramatic fashion, startling potential predators and appearing much larger than it is.

Unlike most fish that swim freely, the flying gurnard prefers to stay near the bottom of shallow seas, usually at depths of 10 to 100 meters.

🧩 Diving Riddle Answer Revealed! 🤿

Last week’s mysterious master of camouflage is none other than… the Common Octopus! 🐙

Known for its extraordinary camouflage skills, this intelligent mollusc can change both color and texture to blend into its surroundings—making it nearly invisible to divers. 🤿

It has eight flexible arms covered in powerful suckers, which it uses to explore, catch prey, and even taste! 🐟

When threatened, it shoots out a cloud of ink to confuse predators and escape. 💨

Although usually solitary and shy, it’s surprisingly playful and curious—divers sometimes witness it investigating cameras, hoses, or even hands! 👋🏻

🧩 Diving Riddle Answer Revealed! 🤿

Last week’s riddle described a solitary hunter of the Mediterranean… and the answer is: the Common Dentex! 🐟

A cousin of the seabream, the dentex is instantly recognizable by its sloping forehead and large mouth armed with sharp teeth. 🦷

Adults can grow up to 1 meter long and tend to stay deeper, making encounters rare and memorable. 👀

Its silvery body often features bluish spots, especially in juveniles, and it’s known to hunt in rocky areas and around Posidonia beds. 🪸

Feared by fish, admired by divers, and respected by spearfishers — the dentex is a legend beneath the waves. 🌊

🧩 Diving Riddle of the Week 🤿

This elusive Mediterranean native prefers the quiet depths, usually beyond the reach of snorkellers. 🌊

With a steep forehead, a powerful jaw, and a shimmering body often dotted with tiny blue spots, it’s a solitary hunter rarely seen by chance. 🦈

It lurks near rocky areas or Posidonia meadows, feeding on smaller fish and invertebrates, and is most often mistaken for an oversized seabream — until it opens its mouth. 🐟

Juveniles are more commonly spotted, but the adults can reach a full meter in length and are true ghosts of the deep. 🪸

🧩 Diving Riddle Answer Revealed! 🤿

Last week, we introduced a streamlined hunter of the reef… and now it’s time to reveal the answer! 🥁

Recognizable by its sleek, torpedo-like body and fearsome, fang-like teeth, the barracuda is a powerful predator often seen cruising the reefs or patrolling in schools. 🦈

It may look intimidating, but barracudas are generally harmless to humans — though they’re known for their intense stare and occasional curiosity toward divers. 👀
