Modern medicine took the place of natural medicine. Medieval plants that were used to cure and heal throughout the years are again becoming popular, and the use of herbs, flowers and plants is of interest to all.

The Middle Ages offered women three choices in the medical profession - practitioner, midwife, or nurse.

A female medical practitioner was often a controversial person, but this depended on the geographical location within Europe.
For example, in Germany there were no general regulations for the practice of medicine. On the other hand, English women practitioners were not admitted to universities and, therefore, their knowledge was limited to what they could learn from their male colleagues.

Medieval midwives introduced simple and natural procedures during labour. For example one of the most common methods during birth was using pepper to provoke sneezing, which was thought to make birth more easy.

The most common diseases during the middle ages were dysentery, epilepsy, influenza, diphtheria, scurvy, typhoid, smallpox, scabies, impetigo, leprosy, pneumonia, stroke, heart attack, scrofula (chronic swollen lymph nodes, later identified as a form of tuberculosis), St. Vitus' Dance (rheumatic chorea, a temporary disorder of the parts of the brain that control movement and coordination), and St. Anthony's Fire (ergotism, caused by ingesting toxic amounts of alkaloids produced by a fungus that infests rye - symptoms included gangrene with burning pain in the extremities, convulsions, hallucinations, and severe psychosis).

The use of plants was the only way to cure these diseases, at that time.

During my explanation , women and children from the Order of St. Lazarus will be preparing a Medieval healthy herbal tea for you to taste.

The Order of Saint Lazarus had its origins in a l***r hospital, founded by Saint Basil, outside the north wall of Jerusalem in the 4th Century AD. The hospital was dedicated to Saint Lazarus when used in the late 11th Century as a facility to segregate and care for pilgrims who had contracted leprosy during their travels to the Holy City.
