During photochemical smog formation, ozonolysis, a reaction which we teach in organic chemistry, also takes place in our Environment. Ozone formed during photochemical reactions, especially in the presence of nitrogen dioxide, reacts with volatile organic compounds having double bonds forming carbonyl compounds. In 1952, during a 5 day episode in London, about 3000 people died due to photochemical smog formation. Ozone in our atmosphere is therefore a pollutant, however in the stratosphere it is beneficial to life on Earth.

When we apply nail polish, most of us do not think about what chemical changes are taking place and what it takes to prepare a bottle of nail polish. These contain a polymer, normally nitrocellulose, dissolved in a solvent, which on evaporating leaves the polymer of the nail surface. The polymer needs to adhere to the nail bed. In gel nail polish, the polymer used is methacrylate, which needs exposure to UV light to set. Plasticizers are also added to prevent chipping and cracking. Of course, one of the most important components is the pigment. A large number of pigments are available with most colours made of a mixture of many different pigments.
Chemistry is all around us.
