In this episode, we sat down with our own Head of Department, Mr Andrew Calleja, who recently completed his Master’s degree with a thesis centred on the role of AI in education. His research highlights a powerful idea: AI isn’t here to replace teachers, it’s here to give them back time. Time to connect, to build relationships, and to focus on the human side of teaching that technology can never replicate.
Our conversation explored the concerns teachers face as AI becomes more present in classrooms. Many worry that automation might diminish their role, especially with so many tasks now being handled by AI. But Andrew emphasised that while AI can support learning, the essence of teaching, empathy, connection, understanding, remains uniquely human and irreplaceable.
We also discussed Andrew’s recent collaboration with JA Malta, where he developed an AI agent for financial education. This tool remembers teachers’ prompts, meaning educators don’t need to repeat the same questions each time they use AI. It’s a simple but powerful shift: less time spent on repetition, more time for creativity, meaningful interactions, and enjoying the classroom experience.
