MSS received 50 pieces of steel pan instruments on the 6th of June from the Annie Laurie trust.

Mr. Jim Browne and Mr. Norman White from the trust fund handed over these instruments to MSS management.

They have also reminded us of their intention to continue to sponsor MSS arts programme in the coming years on behalf of the trust fund.

We appreciate your kind gesture to our school.

Hereโ€™re some of the pictures taken!

World Environment Day - June 05, 2024

Theme: Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience

On June 5, 2024, the global community came together to celebrate World Environment Day, focusing on the critical theme of Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience. This year's observance underscored the importance of restoring degraded lands, combating desertification, and enhancing resilience against drought, all of which are essential for sustainable development and environmental health.

At MSS, the Student Leadership team took this opportunity to actively contribute to land restoration efforts by revitalizing the school's herb plot. This herb plot, initially established by the esteemed former Vice Principal, Mrs. Jais-Ann Patterson, had fallen into disuse over the years. The studentsโ€™ initiative to restore it served as a meaningful tribute to Mrs. Patterson's legacy and highlighted the enduring impact of educators on environmental stewardship.

A key part of this effort involved the Form 2B students, who went to the National Trust to purchase rosemary, tarragon, and black mint. These herbs were carefully chosen for their resilience and suitability to the local climate, ensuring that the herb plot would thrive and provide educational value for years to come.

The MSS Student Leadership team, driven by enthusiasm and a sense of responsibility, rolled up their sleeves and got to work. They cleared overgrown weeds, enriched the soil with compost, and planted the newly acquired herbs. This hands-on experience not only beautified the school grounds but also educated the students on sustainable agricultural practices and the importance of biodiversity.

Participants expressed their excitement and satisfaction in contributing to such a vital cause. "It's inspiring to see how much we can accomplish together," said one of the student leaders. "Restoring this herb plot is a small step, but it represents our commitment to fighting desertification and supporting our environment."

The restored herb plot now stands as a testament to the power of community action and the importance of nurturing our natural resources. It will serve as a practical learning site for future students and a continual reminder of the role that young people can play in global environmental efforts.

World Environment Day 2024 at MSS was not just a day of activity; it was a day of learning, collaboration, and inspiration. Through their hard work, the students of MSS demonstrated that every individual can make a significant difference in the fight against environmental degradation and climate change

Walking through the office today, the colours of impromptu exhibition had to catch one's eyes. Historique: Principal Hogan covered a teacher for a brief moment and had a discussion with the children of our SEN program on the modes of transportation into Montserrat. She asked them to design something for her and let her see. She left the classroom and when she came back to the office later that afternoon, she was greeted with the children's projects proudly laid out by them on top of the filing cabinet outside her office.

Way to go to Mrs Hogan and the MSS team of teachers who awakened such creativity within our SEN children. BRAVO to the Form One SEN children on your work! Well done!!

Dear parents

Term Three begins on Monday. As an educator I have some humble advice.

It's the term with ' Big' and 'decisive' Examinations. Grade 6 and Form 5 parents are anxious and full of all types of hope.

1. It's important to be supportive. Help even if you don't understand the content. Just staying up to study, questioning them, playing the role as their alarm clock, cooking them their favourite meal and even sparing them some chores can help them along.

2. Contrary to popular beliefs.. stop making them believe that if they are not 'successful', life is over. Oh please! ... We are more than grades. Allow them to refocus and move them into an avenue that will strengthen them to overcome. Remind them that there are more opportunities ahead to do better. I didn't get 7 ones. I turned out great. I took my threes and kept aspiring!

Similarly... a scholarship doesn't mean you arrive. Unfortunately. ..some students think I got a scholarship, I'll ride the wave. No! keep persevering. Because I have seen students with passes with a hunger to do better.

4. Form four and grade 5 parents... it's a good time to watch closely, your child's progress report card. Spot the weak areas and find help. Those final years are often TOO late to help alleviate big problems. Parents must understand their children's learning level. A B might be your child's best. Understand them and encourage them.

5. A big exam year doesn't mean they should stop playing sports, going to guides or music... They need a break from the books. We want holistic and socially healthy individuals not just book smart.

6. Attend school meetings. Listen to the school's and teacher concerns and you yourself ask questions that are aimed to making your relationship with your child's school and your child better.

7. If your child doesn't meet the criteria for graduation, anger towards the child and even the school are common. First address why they didn't meet the criteria, and understand where to channel your disappointment. But as indicated before... it's a set back for a comeback. Teach children to take accountability for their actions.

8. If you can't afford to send your kids 'Away'to study like their friends, don't break your bank. It's okay to let them work a few years and let them mature and figure out the next step. Caribbean universities are good you know! If you didn't know... your child can matriculate straight into UWI online or their physical campuses straight out of high school. Ka mem do what you prefer.

9. Remind your children to say thank you to their teachers. Many of the form 5 and grade 6 teachers especially do go the extra mile to help students in this critical year.

10. There are children with genuine behavioural issues, some stem from their homes, sholastic ability and teenage issues... Parents help teachers with this. It is a concern that is putting h a lot of pressure on school life.

11. Some may agree to disagree. I'm not here to take anyone's hustle... But SUMMER TIME is for relaxation... I pa pou dot lecole.. zor pa las? I think creative classes to learn a new skill like to bake, sports or dance are better than going back in books. Some remedial work can do... but let those children FREE UP! They coming back September tiyaaadddd!

Anyway... my 2 cents with VAT. Happy New Term. โœŒ๐Ÿพ
