UNU Macau has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Blue Institute, Seychelles, to advance collaboration at the intersection of digital technologies, ocean and coastal issues, and sustainable development.

The partnership brings together UNU Macau’s expertise in digital technologies for sustainable development and the Blue Institute’s focus on connecting science-led marine conservation with sustainable economic development.

Building on this shared expertise, the collaboration will explore tailored programmes on AI for the Blue Economy, applying digital technologies to marine and coastal challenges and advancing sustainable development through research and innovation.

Can social protection be automated without eroding fundamental rights? In our latest Insight Blog, Luis Frota from the International Labour Office (ILO) demonstrates that the answer depends less on the algorithm itself than on the policy logic that governs it.

🔑 Key Insight: Automation can strengthen social protection when designed to uphold human rights, but easily turns into punitive surveillance under austerity. Protecting human dignity requires enforceable legal safeguards and meaningful human judgement for all rights-affecting decisions.

🎓 UNU Macau Summer Training Programme 2026 Concluded Successfully 🔗 https://go.unu.edu/B17c5
From 17 to 20 August, UNU Macau welcomed 26 participants from Huazhong University of Science and Technology to explore how technology can support a more sustainable and equitable future.

Across four days, participants examined the SDGs and the UN’s role (Dr. Min Yang), built a foundation in AI fundamentals and socio‑political contexts (Dr. David Daou), and explored AI tools for academic and professional practice (Dr. Daou and Jia’an Liu). They also joined peer exchanges with UNU Fellows (Junji Jiang and Jingke Xu), gaining perspectives on academic pathways and professional development.

Building on these experiences, students took part in the AI for Good Project Proposal Workshop (Dr. Farhan Latif), where they developed and presented their own project ideas, applying their learning to real‑world challenges.

UNU Macau is committed to creating opportunities for young people to learn, exchange, and innovate, while exploring how responsible AI can advance sustainable development.

8月17日至20日，研究所迎來了來自華中科技大學的26人訪團，共同探討如何利用科技推動更加可持續、公平的未來。

在研究所研究員的帶領下，學員們系統學習了可持續發展目標與聯合國在國際關係中的作用，由楊敏博士講授；人工智能的基礎與社會政治語境，以及人工智能在災害風險減緩和管理中的應用，由David Daou博士講授；人工智能工具在學術與專業實踐中的應用，由David Daou博士和劉家安研究員共同分享。同時，學員們還與聯合國大學研究員姜珺吉、徐婧柯交流，瞭解學術路徑與職業發展。

在此基礎上，學員們在Farhan Latif博士的指導下參加了人工智能向善項目提案工作坊，並展示了自己的項目構想，將所學知識應用於現實挑戰。

聯合國大學駐澳門研究所致力於為青年提供學習、交流與創新的平台，鼓勵他們在探索負責任人工智能的過程中，為可持續發展貢獻新思路。

🕊️ World Humanitarian Day 2026 |
Today, the UN flag is lowered to honour humanitarian personnel who have lost their lives while serving others.

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres reminds us: “Humanitarian workers stand up for people in need. We must stand up for them. We must act for humanity.”

This year’s Act For Humanity campaign highlights the need for stronger accountability and greater protection for humanitarian workers and civilians, including against the misuse of drones and other emerging technologies.

UNU Macau stands with this call for responsible innovation and stronger safeguards to ensure that emerging technologies serve humanity and protect human dignity.

今天，聯合國降下半旗，向所有在危機與困境中為有需要的人挺身而出的人道主義工作者致敬，也緬懷那些在履行人道使命過程中失去生命的工作者。

正如聯合國秘書長安東尼奧·古特雷斯所說：“人道主義工作者為需要幫助的民眾挺身而出，我們必須為他們挺身而出。我們必須為人類行動起來。”

今年的“為人道而行動”全球倡議強調，應進一步加強問責機制，為人道主義工作者和民眾提供更有力的保護，包括應對無人機及其他新興技術被濫用所帶來的日益嚴峻的風險。

🚀 UNU Macau Summer Training Programme 2026 Kicks Off
We are pleased to welcome 25 students from Huazhong University of Science and Technology to our Summer Training Programme at UNU Macau.

The programme opened today with an introduction to the UN system and SDGs by Dr. Min Yang, followed by a session on AI, ideologies, and the myth of neutrality led by Dr. David Daou, setting the stage for four days of immersive learning and exchange.

Over the coming days, participants will explore AI ethics, the SDGs, and UN system functions, while engaging in hands‑on workshops on AI tools and developing AI‑for‑Good project proposals. Through expert‑led sessions and collaborative group work, the programme fosters innovation, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of how AI can advance sustainable development.

We are honored to have received 340 submissions from 74 countries and territories, with nearly three-quarters of them originating from the Global South.

Together, we will address critical priorities shaping the landscape of education and technology—ranging from future-ready employability skills and Agentic AI, to trustworthy communication, AI education in low-resource regions, and Macau’s unique role in fostering global AI partnerships.

Selected panelists will be invited to contribute to the conference proceedings, to be published in the UNU–Springer book series on AI and Sustainable Development—a lasting resource for research, policy, and practice.
