Puccini’s Only Comedy Opera – Arriving at Macao Cultural Centre This April🎭

When we think of Puccini, grand spectacles like Turandot, the poignant sadness of La Bohème, or the tragic beauty of Madama Butterfly often come to mind. Yet this opera maestro also composed one unique comedy – Gianni Schicchi.

Based on Dante’s Inferno, the story follows the Florentine Donati family, who, in a sudden inheritance scramble, enlist the clever and cunning Gianni Schicchi to impersonate the deceased and forge a new will. Schemes and lies unfold at a brisk pace, weaving a witty human comedy.

With his signature delicate musical touch, Puccini blends greed, family ties, and absurdity into one brilliant work. The opera also features the world-famous soprano aria O mio babbino caro – a melody so beautiful that it has become one of the most beloved classics in operatic history.

This production is presented as a chamber opera in a piano reduction version, performed in the original Italian with Chinese and English subtitles. Set in the intimate Black Box II, audiences can experience up close the nuanced layers of Puccini’s music and the live energy of operatic performance.

改編自但丁《神曲・地獄篇》，故事講述佛羅倫斯 Donati 家族在一場突如其來的遺產爭奪中，請來聰明狡猾的 Gianni Schicchi 假扮死者、偽造遺囑。一連串的算計與謊言，在輕快的節奏中交織成充滿機鋒的人性喜劇。
