Speaking—It’s a conversation, not an interview!

The biggest barrier to a Band 8.0+ in Speaking isn't just vocabulary—it’s fluency and confidence. During my test, I treated the examiner like a person I was meeting for coffee, not a judge.

My Speaking Tips:

✅ Don’t give one-word answers: Always use the "Extend" method. Give your answer, then say "because..." or "for instance..."

✅ Master the "Filler": Instead of saying "Umm," use natural phrases like "That's a tough question, let me think..." or "To be honest, I’ve never thought about it that way before."

✅ Record Yourself: I used to record my voice on my phone and play it back. It’s embarrassing at first, but it’s the only way to hear your own rhythm and tone.

INTRODUCTION:

The diagram illustrates how lead pencils are manufactured.

OVERVIEW:

Overall, the production process can be broadly divided into three main stages, beginning with the cultivation of trees, followed by the processing of timber, and culminating in the assembly and finishing of the pencils. It is noticeable that tree growth is by far the longest stage, whereas the remaining steps are completed within a considerably shorter timeframe.

BODY 1:

At the initial stage, seedlings are cultivated for four months before being replanted in larger plantations. After a further three years, the trees are selectively pruned in order to promote healthy development. Once the trees have fully matured after approximately fourteen years, they are harvested and transported to a factory for further processing.

BODY 2:

In the subsequent stage, the timber is converted into thin wooden slats, which then undergo a treatment procedure lasting sixty days. Grooves are subsequently carved into the slats so that graphite cores can be inserted. Following this, another slat is affixed to the top, creating a layered structure with the graphite enclosed inside. The resulting composite is then subjected to heat and compressed firmly before being cut into individual pencils. In the final phase, the pencils are polished, painted, sharpened and stamped, after which they are packaged and distributed for commercial sale.

BAND 8–9 MODEL ANSWER

The pie charts illustrate how household spending in a European country was distributed across six categories in 2000 and 2025.
Overall, housing accounted for the largest proportion of expenditure in both years and became even more dominant by 2025. By contrast, spending on food and other items declined considerably, whereas transport and healthcare experienced moderate growth.

In 2000, housing represented 35% of total household expenditure, followed by food at 25%. Transport made up 15%, while entertainment and other expenses each accounted for 10%. Healthcare constituted the smallest share, at only 5%.
By 2025, the proportion allocated to housing had risen significantly to 40%, maintaining its position as the biggest expense category. Transport also increased, climbing to 20%, while healthcare grew modestly to 8%.

Conversely, food expenditure fell sharply from 25% to 15%, and the figure for other items halved to just 5%. Entertainment experienced a slight increase, reaching 12% in 2025.
