How Switzerland turned everyday salt into a global health breakthrough 🇨🇭
Until the early 20th century, parts of Switzerland, particularly in Alpine regions, were affected by a poorly understood condition. Entire communities were impacted by unexplained health issues.
Through research, Swiss scientists identified iodine deficiency as the cause and developed a simple solution: adding iodine to table salt. As a product used daily, salt provided an effective and scalable way to reach the population.
The impact was rapid. Health conditions improved, and the approach soon gained international attention. Today, iodized salt is used in more than 100 countries and remains a key public health measure worldwide.
