Nouns and Determiners (အပိုင်း ၁)

Noun is that it describes a person, place or thing.
နာမ်ဆိုတာ လူ၊နေရာ၊အရာဝတ္ထု စတာတွေကို ဖော်ပြတဲ့အရာပါ။

Concepts အယူအဆ၊ qualities အရည်အသွေး၊ organization အဖွဲ့အစည်း၊ communities ရပ်ကွက်အုပ်စု၊ sensations ခံစားသိမြင်မှု၊ events အဖြစ်အပျက် စတဲ့ a range of additional meanings နောက်ထပ်အဓိပ္ပါယ်အမျိုးမျိုးကို to express ဖော်ပြဖို့ရာ In fact we use nouns ကျနော်တို့ဟာ နာမ်တွေကို သုံးကြတာပါ။ noun endings နာမ်အဆုံးသပ်လေးတွေကို အရင်လေ့လာကြည့်ရအောင်။
tradition ဆိုတဲ့ Noun မှာ ion ဆုံးပါတယ်။
ability ဆိုတဲ့ noun မှာ ity ဆုံးပါတယ်။
excellence ဆိုတဲ့ noun မှာ ence ဆုံးပါတယ်။ significance ဆိုတဲ့ noun မှာ ance ဆုံးပါတယ်။ factor ဆိုတဲ့ noun မှာ or ဆုံးပါတယ်။ rigour ဆိုတဲ့ noun မှာ our ဆုံးပါတယ်။
ဆိုတော့က အဆုံးသပ်လေးတွေကြည့်ပြီး noun ဆိုတာ သိနိုင်တယ်ပေါ့နော်။
Many plural nouns ends in “s”. နာမ်အများကိန်းတွေမှာတော့ အများအားဖြင့် “s” ဆုံးတာပေါ့နော်။

Capital Letter
Proper Noun တစ်ဦးဆိုင်နာမ်ဖြစ်ကြတဲ့ နာမည်တွေကို ဝါကျအစ မဟုတ်ဘဲ ဘယ်နေရာမှာမဆို Capital Letter အကြီးစာလုံးနဲ့ စရေးရပါတယ်။
the names of people, လူအမည်၊ places နေရာတွေအမည်၊ towns မြို့တွေအမည်၊ countries တိုင်းပြည် နိုင်ငံအမည် စတဲ့ noun တွေကို အကြီးစာလုံးနဲ့ စရေးရတယ်။
Capital Letters တွေကို တခြားဘယ်နေရာမှာ ရေးကြပါသေးလဲဆိုတော့-
နေ့ရက်အမည်၊ လအမည်၊ လူမျိုးအမည်၊ တိုင်းရင်းသားစုအမည်၊ ဘာသာစကားတွေအမည်တွေကို အကြီးစာလုံးနဲ့ ရေးရပါတယ်။
We also use a capital letter in days of the week, months of the year and the names of nationalities, ethnic groups and languages. ပေါ့နော်။
The positions of noun
ဝါကျတစ်ကြောင်းမှာ နာမ်တွေဘယ်နေရာက လာနိုင်လဲဆိုတော့-
(1) Nouns act as the subject of a verb.
ကြိယာရဲ့ ပြုခြင်းဖြစ်ခြင်းရှိခြင်းကို လုပ်ဆောင်ပေးတဲ့ကတ္တား Subject နေရာ၊
(2) as the object of a verb.
အပြုခံ ကံပုဒ် Object နေရာ၊
(3) as the complement of a verb.
Complement လို့ခေါ်တဲ့ ဖြည့်စွက်ပုဒ်နေရာတွေမှာပေါ့။ အဲ့ဒီနေရာတွေဟာ Noun ရဲ့တည်နေရာတွေပေါ့ဗျာ။
ဟုတ်ကဲ့ ကျနော် ဆရာဉာဏ် က ဥပမာလေးတွေနဲ့ ပြပါ့မယ်။ ဆက်ကြည့်ပါ။
-Cats kill mice.
Sub = Cats = Noun
Obj = mice = Noun

-They are men.
Subject Complement = men = Noun,
They are သူတို့ဟာ ဖြစ်ကြတယ်ဆိုရင် အဓိပ္ပါယ်မပြည့်၀သေးပါဘူး။
သူတို့ဟာ ဘယ်သူတွေဖြစ်ကြတယ်ဆိုတဲ့ Sub ကို အဓိပ္ပါယ်ပြည့်၀အောင် ဖြည့်စွက်ပေးလို့
men ဆိုတဲ့ noun ဟာ Sub complement အဖြစ်လာတာပါ။
အိုခေ complements တွေကို နောက်အခန်းတွေမှ အသေးစ်ိတ် ရှင်းပြပါ့မယ်။

Countable and Uncountable Noun
Countable or “unit” nouns (CN) have a singular and a plural form.
ရေတွက်လို့ရတဲ့နာမ်တွေကို Countable Noun ဒါမှမဟုတ် unit Noun လို့ခေါ်ပါတယ်။
CN တွေမှာ တစ်ခုကိန်းရော အများကိန်းပါ ရှိကြပါတယ်။
Uncountable or "mass" noun (UN) have only one form.
ရေတွက်မရတဲ့နာမ်ကို Uncountable Noun သို့မဟုတ် mass noun လို့ခေါ်ပါတယ်။ သူတို့မှာ အများကိန်းအသွင် မရှိပါဘူး။
The distinction between CN and UN is based on whether or not we can count 1.2.3…
CN and UN ရဲ့ ကွဲပြားချက်က 1,2,3,4 စသည်ဖြင့် ရေတွက်လို့ရ၊ မရ အပေါ်မူတည်ပါတယ်။

Countable Noun (CN)
Nouns which describe separate and separable objects are usually countable.
သီးခြားစီ ခွဲခြားဖော်ပြလို့ရတဲ့နာမ်၊ အမျိုးမျိုးကွဲပြားတဲ့ အရာဝတ္ထုတွေဟာ ရေတွက်လို့ရပါတယ်။

dog-dogs စတာတွေဟာ CN ပေါ့။

Uncountable Noun (UN)
Nouns which describe liquid, materials, substances and abstract qualities.
liquid အရည်၊ materials သစ်သား၊ အစ၊ အထည်၊ substances ငွေကြေးဥစ္စာ၊ abstract qualities ဒြပ်မဲ့အရာတွေ (ကိုင်တွယ်စမ်းသပ်လို့မရ စိတ်နဲ့သာသိစေရတဲ့ စိတ္တဇနာမ်) တွေဟာ UN တွေပေါ့။

C ကစတဲ့ နာမ်အုပ်စု နှစ်မျိုးကို CN လို့မှတ်ပြီး၊ ကျန်တာ UN လို့ မှတ်ပါ။

*Nouns which can be CN and UN
တစ်ချို့ Noun တွေဟာ CN ရော UN ရော နှစ်မျိုးလုံးရနေတတ်တယ်။
Some nouns are countable with one meaning, and uncountable with a different meaning.
အချို့နာမ်တွေဟာ အဓိပ္ပါယ်တစ်မျိုးမှာ ရေတွက်လို့ရပြီး၊ အဓိပ္ပါယ်ကွဲတွေမှာ ရေတွက်လို့မရပါ။
Eg. - We got lost in a wood. (wood = CN)
Wood burns more easier than coal. (wood = UN)
နောက်ထပ် ဥပမာတွေ ဆက်ကြည့်ရအောင်။
ဘာသာပြန်မပေးတော့ဘူးနော်။ ကိုယ်တိုင်ကြိုးစားကြည့်ပါ။
*hair (CN/UN)
-There are two hairs in my coffee. (CN)
-I don’t have much hair. (UN)

*light (CN/UN)
-There are two lights in our bedroom. (CN)
-Close the curtain. There’s too much light! (UN)

*noise (CN/UN)
-Shhhhh! I thought I heard a noise. (CN)
-It’s difficult to work when there is too much noise. (UN)

*paper (CN/UN)
-Have you got a paper to read? (CN)
-I want to draw a picture. Have you got some paper. (UN)

*room (CN/UN)
-Our house has seven rooms. (CN)

# Closely related countable and uncountable nouns
အနီးကပ်ဆက်စပ်နေတဲ့ CN နဲ့ UN

တချို့ UN တွေဟာ ဆင်တူစကားလုံးကွဲ တစ်မျိုးမျိုးနဲ့ ရေတွက်န်ိုင်သွားပါတယ်။
Some UN have a countable equivalent which is a different word.
Eg. –work (UN)
job (CN) (job တစ်ခုမကလုပ်န်ိုင်လို့)
work ဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံးအရ ရေတွက်မရပေမယ့် job ဆိုတဲ့ အနီးကပ်စကားလုံးအရ ရေတွက်န်ိုင်တာတွေ့ရပါတယ်။
-travel (UN)
-journey (CN) (ခရီးစဉ်တစ်ခေါက်မကသွားနိုင်လို့)

တချို့ UN တွေဟာ CN အပ်ိုင်းလေးတွေအဖြစ် ကွဲပြားတာလည်းရှိပါတယ်။
The things some UN describe can be “broken up” into countable components.
UN တွေဟာ CN အဖြစ် အပိုင်းလေးတွေ ကွဲသွားတာပါ။
Eg. money (UN) pounds/ dollars/ yen/ kyats (CN)
ငွေဟာ ရေတွက်မရတဲ့ N ပါ။ ဒါပေမယ့် သူကနေ ကွဲသွားတဲ့ nouns တွေဟာ ရေတွက်နိုင်တဲ့ ယူနစ်တွေပေါ့။

Regular and irregular plural forms (ပုံမှန်နဲ့ ပုံမမှန်အများကိန်းအသွင်များ)

ပုံမှန်အများကိန်းအသွင်ဟာ s နဲ့ ဆုံးပါတယ်။
Regular plural forms ends in the letter “s”.
Eg. pen pens
dog dogs
book books

-y နဲ့ဆုံးရင် “y ကို i ပြောင်း es ပေါင်း”
Eg. baby ---- babies
lady ---- ladies
*y ရှေ့ သရ တစ်လုံးပါရင်တော့ s သာပေါင်း။ Eg. key---keys

-s, sh, ch, x, z ဆုံးလည်း “es” ပေါင်းပြီး များတာပဲ။
We add “es” to singular nouns which end in “s, sh, ch, x and z”.
Eg. pass --- passes
wish --- wishes
church --- churches
box --- boxes
buzz --- buzzes
-“o” ဆုံးရင်လည်း “es” ပေါင်းမှာပဲ။
Eg. potato potatoes
tomato tomatoes
mosquito mosquito(e)s*
-“f” ဆုံးတဲ့အခါ “f” နေရာ “ves” ပြောင်းပေးရုံပါ။
Eg. loaf --- loaves
Leaf --- leaves
**vowel + fe ဆုံးရင်လည်း “ves” ပေါင်းရတာပဲ။
Eg. wife --- wives
life --- lives

*ချွင်းချက် အနေနဲ့ ကတော့
Singular form--- plural form လုံး၀ မတူတဲ့ noun ရှိသလို၊ လုံးလုံးတူတဲ့ noun လည်းရှိတာပဲ။
Eg. person --- people (လုံးဝမတူ)
sheep --- sheep (လုံးလုံးတူ)
-တချို့ noun မှာ ခါးအလုံးပြောင်းရတယ်။
Eg. man --- men

* Quantifying phrases *
အရေတွက်အတိုင်းတာပြ စကားစု
ဒီစကားစုတွေနောက်မှာ Noun နဲ့ Verb အသုံးပုံစံ (တစ်ခုကိန်း / အများကိန်း) ကိုလေ့လာပါ။
-A number of N များ + V များ
Eg. A number of devices are used in self-service supermarkets to display goods.
-A range of N များ + V များ
-A variety of N များ + V များ

Eg. A wide range of people were invited.
(တချို့ Native Speakers တွေကတော့ V ကို တစ်ခုကိန်းနဲ့ရေးတာ ပိုနှစ်သက်ပါတယ်။)

-The number of N များ + V တစ်ခုကိန်း
Eg. The number of hours human workers work is limited by law.
-A mount of UN + V singular
-A small amount of UN + V singular
-A large amount of UN + V singular
-A [small/large] quantity of + UN (or) CN plural
-A [small/large] proportion of + UN (or) CN plural
-A [small/large] majority of + UN (or) CN plural
(အဲလိုတွဲမှတ်ပါ။ ဥပမာ မပေးတော့ပါ။)

# တချို့ noun တွေဟာ မူလစကားလုံးမှာထဲက "s" ဆုံးပြီး အများကိန်းအသွင်ရှိပြီးသားပါ။

အဲလို အများကိန်းဆောင်တဲ့ နာမ်ရှေ့မှာ A pair of တွဲပေးရပါတယ်။
-A pair of trousers ဘောင်းဘီတစ်ထည်
-A pair of scissors ကပ်ကြေးတစ်လက်
-A pair of glasses မျက်မှန်တစ်လက်
သူတို့တတွေကို အများကိန်းပုံစံရေးချင်ရင် pairs လို့ရေးပါ။
-Two pairs of shoes ရှူးဖိနပ် နှစ်ရံ

*Article* (the wider class of determiner)
There are two kinds of Articles.
-(1) Indefinite article: a & an
-(2) Definite article: the

Where do they come in sentences? အာတီကယ်တွေဟာ ဝါကျတွေမှာ ဘယ်နေရာက
ပါတတ်သလဲ။
-they come at the beginning of noun phrases (Noun phrases တွေရဲ့ အစဦးဆုံးမှာ ပါတတ်တယ်။)
ဆိုလိုတာက
-before a noun or an adjective (N ရှေ့ သို့မဟုတ် Adj ရှေ့)
**Article + (Adj) + N** လို့မှတ်။
-I heard a noise. (before N)
-I heard an eerie noise. (before Adj)
နောက်တစ်ခုက
-before a combination of adv, adj and N (Article + Adv + Adj + N)
-I heard the strangely muffled noise. (before adv + Adj + N)

*We can leave out articles when we are referring to something general.
တစ်စုံတစ်ခုကို ယေဘုယသဘောဖော်ပြရင် article ဖြုတ်ရပါတယ်။

(III) Complex Sentences

# A sentence that contains an independent clause and one or more dependent clause #

Independent clause = simple sentence ( it can stand alone & make sense.)
- The cat is sleeping. (IC)

Subordinate Conjunction + (IC) = Dependent Clause (DC)
( It cannot stand alone and need more information to make sense.)
- When the cat is sleeping (DC),

(IV) Compound-Complex Sentences

# A compound-complex sentence has at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. #

* (IC) + (DC), (Cc) + (IC). = Compound-complex sentence
- The dog ran off when I chased him, but I didn't care.
- It is important to vote when the time comes, or you won't get a say in new laws.

* (DC), (IC), (Cc) + (IC).
- When I went to the store, my parents wanted me to pick up some milk, but I didn't have enough money.
- Though my mother says it doesn't matter, I am tall, and she is short.

* (IC), (Cc) + (IC) + (DC).
- Aye Aye loves her brother, and he loves her too because she pays his bills.
- The dog needed a new leash, and he couldn't go for a walk until he had one.

# Note that #
- The dependent clause can be at the beginning, middle, or end of a compound-complex sentence.
- You need to put a comma before the coordinating conjunction.
- You need to put a comma after the dependent clause when it occurs at the beginning of the compound-complex sentence.

# Sentence Expanding #

Sentence expanding is the process of adding one or more words, phrases, clauses to the main clause (or independent clause).

- An appositive is a word or group of words that concisely identifies or renames another word in a sentence.

# 4 # Expanding sentences with adjective clauses (relative clauses).

- Adjective clauses are dependent clauses, and usually begin with a relative pronoun (which, that, who, whom or whose) or a relative adverb (where, when, and why).

An adjective clause (that is) set off from the main clause by commas*
