You are based in Mae Hong Son or Chiang Mai? You are interested in Shan history and culture? You are interested in knowing more about archival research and digitization work?

This opportunity is for you!

On August 1-13, 2026, the Inya Institute together with Thailand-based institutional partners will conduct digital preservation work at various monasteries in the Mae Hong Son area.

The purpose of the digital preservation work is to digitize the collections of manuscripts preserved in a select groups of monasteries in the Mae Hong Son area, provide repair for manuscripts that may be damaged, catalog all the manuscripts for better identification of their contents, and make available the digital files to the larger public. All manuscripts held at the monasteries will be digitized on-site and put back together in their original location.

Together with the field trip team, you will assist in the following tasks:
● Assist the team in interviewing the residing abbot and the local zare about the manuscripts held at the monastery and the history of the collection;
● Assist the team in digitizing the entire collection of manuscripts preserved at the monasteries;
● Assist the team in repairing manuscripts that are damaged;
● Assist the team in putting all the manuscripts in their original location.

A daily stipend will be offered to interns during the field research.

The Inya Institute is pleased to announce its 2026 language course series on three prominent languages spoken in Myanmar: (1) Karen – S’gaw; (2) Kachin – Jinghpaw; and (3) Shan – Tai long.

The three-week language course will equip participants with the essential skills needed to communicate confidently and effectively in one of these three languages in a broad range of situations. Our team of language teachers received training from and had course materials reviewed by U.S. trained language instructors.

No prior knowledge of this language is required.

The language course is open to undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate students, professionals, researchers, and NGO workers of any nationality, wherever they are based in Myanmar, Southeast Asia, the U.S., and elsewhere. The language of instruction will be English.

Language classes will be held online.
