Our IGCSE maths teacher’s journey in this field began with a Bachelor’s Degree (B.Sc) in maths. Since then, he has received a Bachelor (Honours), Master’s Degree (M.Sc), and Doctorate (Ph.D) in maths, and has been teaching this subject for more than 34 years. He has not only taught undergraduate and graduate maths courses at universities but has also authored and published grade 10, 11, and 12 mathematics material. His leadership and mentorship are highly valued and we are confident that he will be able to guide students at NHN with the highest level of care.

What are the IGCSE Exams? An overview by NHN Education

IGCSE stands for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education. It was developed by the CAIE (Cambridge Assessment International Education) department of Cambridge University, and is designed for students aged 14 to 16 to take before advanced level (Year 11-12) studies. Other prestigious universities, including Pearson (Edexcel), have developed their own versions. In Myanmar, IGCSE has become the most popular program for students seeking an English-speaking alternative to local curriculums.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐈𝐆𝐂𝐒𝐄?

-It is recognised by universities all over the world

The curriculum for IGCSE subjects are designed by prestigious, top-ranking universities and define the international standards for secondary education. It is recognised by public and private universities all over the world and can be used to apply to institutions everywhere.

-Abundance of subject choices

Edexcel IGCSE offers a selection of 37 subjects for students to choose from. Students who are interested in particular subjects that are not part of the local curriculums (such as ICT, Accounting, Business, Further Pure Maths and English) are able to study them in IGCSE classes.

-It provides a guaranteed pathway to overseas studies

The IGCSE certificate offers students a wider range of choices. Students can choose to continue studying for A levels within Myanmar, apply for high school year 11-13 overseas, or take foundation studies programs at universities overseas (which usually take around 10 months).

-It teaches practical skills required to thrive in modern job settings

The IGCSE curriculum guides students to develop skills that are crucial to succeeding in a modern workplace. This includes critical thinking, team work and organisation, research, and language skills.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞?

Usually, it takes up to two years for a student to complete the course and be ready to take the examinations. At NHN Education, our course duration will take up to 14 months as we aim for students to take the IGCSE exams by the first half of 2025.

Selecting the right IGCSE Subjects

Choosing subjects for IGCSE can be a challenging task for those unfamiliar with the curriculum, but NHN Education is here to guide you through the selection process.

Number of subjects
First, it is important to develop an idea about how many subjects you are expected to take. For Pearson Edexcel, which is the curriculum that NHN follows, students are able to take from a minimum of 5 subjects to a maximum of 14 subjects. Most students take 7-8 subjects. This selection is usually comprised of:
* Two mandatory core subjects (English & Mathematics) &
* A selection of subjects relevant to the student’s planned major

Curriculum Groups
All subjects can be roughly split into five categories, which are as follows:
* Language and Literature
* Humanities and Social Sciences (E.g. History, Geography)
* Science Subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
* Vocational and technical subjects (Accounting, Business, ICT) &
* Mathematics (Maths, Further Maths, Additional Maths)
For subjects that are optional, it is necessary to take future plans into account and select from curriculum groups relevant to your major.

Available Subjects
The Edexcel subjects available at NHN as of now are:
* English
* Mathematics B
* Further Pure Maths
* Biology
* Chemistry
* Physics
* Business Studies
* ICT
* Economics &
* Accounting
All students at NHN Education are required to take English and Maths B as these core subjects provide the foundation to understanding other subjects.

NHN Education’s recommendations:

For students planning to select a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) major such as space science, computer science, or physics, we strongly recommend a selection of both Maths and Further Pure Maths, all three science subjects, and technical/vocational subjects including ICT.

If you are interested in jobs and majors related to diplomacy or academia, social sciences such as economics should be a priority. It would also be a good idea to take a variety of science and vocational subjects.

For students aiming to work in a medical field (biomedicine, veterinary, dentistry, pharmaceuticals, etc), it is definitely a requirement to study all three sciences and both maths and further pure maths. As these subjects are highly affected by the advancement of technology and global development, we also recommend taking technical subjects such as ICT, and social sciences such as economics.

If your interest lies in business, hospitality management or commerce, we highly recommend taking a combination that helps develop financial and technical literacy. One such combination would be economics, business studies, ICT and accounting. It would also be a good idea to study 2 maths subjects.

Balance
Lastly, balance is the key! It will be very helpful to have a diversity of knowledge as you move further along on your education journey. It is not only important to select subjects that are required for your major, but also to pick ones that you find interesting. After all, the learning process should be as enjoyable as possible.
