The derivation of the term pottery in Myanmar has some signification as it shows to some extent whence the art was introduced or how it was affected or modified by foreign influences. The Myanmar word “ O ” pronounced with the heavy tone cannot be derived from an Indian language because in the two Indian classical languages, namely, Sanskrit and Pali, which have most affected Myanmar literature and art, the wordpot is expressed by kumbha, from whichKumhar, Kumar, the caste of potters, is evidently derived.1 In the Chinese language, on the other hand, which is split up into several dialects the word “ Huo,” with its variants, O (Wenchow), Oh (Ningpo), occurs.2

ပံုႏွိပ္ျခင္းအတတ္သည္ သရုပ္ျပအႏုပညာအတတ္တြင္ပါ၀င္သည္။ စာေပအေရးအသားေပၚေပါက္သည္ႏွင့္တစ္ၿပိဳင္နက္ ပံုနွိပ္ျခင္းအတတ္ ေပၚေပါက္လာသည္မဟုတ္ေပ။ စာမ်ားကိုလက္ျဖင့္ေရးသားကူးယူၾကရသည္။ ေအဒီ ၈၆၈ ခုႏွစ္ တရုတ္ႏိုင္ငံတြင္ရိုက္ႏွိပ္ေသာစာအုပ္သည္ ယခုေတြ႕ရွိသမွ် ေရွးအက်ဆံုးပံုႏွိပ္စာအုပ္ျဖစ္သည္။ ၁၄၂၃ ခုႏွစ္တြင္ ရိုက္ႏွိပ္ေသာ စိန္ခရစၥတိုဖာရုပ္ပံုကားသည္ ဥေရာပတုိက္၏ ေရွးအက်ဆံုး ပံုႏွိပ္ပစၥည္းျဖစ္သည္။

Kalasa
A type of vessel which played an important role in Bagan Period, especially for ritual purpose, is kalasa pot. The word “Kalasā uiw” seems to refer to the ‘kalasha’ (meaning a water pot, a rain vase) which is a prominent part of the Hindu temples. Havell in his “Indian Architectuer” says; The water Pot, the kalasha or Kumbhu held the creative element, or the nectar of immortality churned by gods and demons from the cosmic ocean. According to Professor Acharya’s ‘A Dictionary of Hindu Architecture,’ the word “kalas(s) a” means a pitcher, a copula, a finial, a dome, a pinnacle, a tower, a type of round building or a summit of a tower. One of the most well-known inscriptions of Bagan Period is Kyansittha's Palace Inscriptions. There are six tall four-sided pillars. In the Inscription, the detail function of kalasa pot was mentioned and detail account of the preparation of sprinkling holy water.
