Right Now, we need to stand with Thai students!
The hunger striking activist’s mom has kneed in front of a prison insisting on seeing her son after the activist was again detained due to another charge.
On Friday, 19 August 2016, Jatuphat Boonpattaraksa, aka Phai, an anti-junta activist from the pro-democracy Dao Din group, was arrested at the provincial court of Phu Khiao District for participating in an anti-junta campaign on 22 May 2015. This is immediately after he was granted bail from another case related to anti-junta campaign in northeastern Chaiyaphum Province.
The activist has been detained for 13 days since the police arrested him on 6 August when he handed out anti-draft charter flyers at a market in Phu Khiao. Shortly after the arrest, he started a hunger strike because he asserted that his activity is lawful. The police indicted him under Article 61(2) of the the controversial Referendum Act for allegedly distributing materials that distorted the draft’s content.
On Thursday, the Chaiyaphum Provincial Court granted bail to Jatuphat after his lawyer submitted 30,000 bahts together with a lawyer license of Jatuphat's father as bail. However, as Jatuphat also faces three more accusations from participating in anti-junta campaigns in Khon Kaen and Bangkok, the Khon Kaen police took him in custody immediately.
Around 5.30 pm, while authorities tried to transfer him from the prison of Phu Khiao District to the northeastern province of Khon Kaen, where the complaint was filed, Jatuphat’s mother and sister kneed in front of the prison obstructing the transfer. The activist’s mother pleaded to the police to see her son in order to have him signed a document necessary for enrolling courses at Khon Kaen University, where Phai is a student at Law Faculty. Thursday is the last day for enrollment, added the mother.
“I asked [the police] politely but they refused. Isn’t it too much? Where is the justice? You told me to bail my son but when I do it, you detained my son again… It’s ok. If they don’t give me a proper answer, I will keep kneeing like this,” Jatuphat’s mother strongly stated.

Statement on The Youth’s Dream for Future Mekong
We, The Mekong Youth Assembly, a network of young environmental advocate groups and individuals from six Mekong countries, get together beside the Mekong River today. We witness challenges and difficulties our fellow youth advocates are facing to protect the environment and our beloved communities. We seek for like-minded friends to join the journey of the following dreams to reality:
1. We dream that we are encouraged to express our opinions freely in all aspects of any given development project. Our movement to stand up for responsibledevelopment, justice, non-discrimination, peace and equality are protected by law.
2. We dream that our right to participation inany decision making toward the fate of our rivers, our communities and our futuremust be respected.
3. We dream that today’s adults, especially those in power, would bear in mind that “you do not inherit the Earth from ancestors, you borrow it from us, yourchildren”. Make sure our mother earth shall be returned to us with prosperous life elements. In this regard, always respectfully consider our lives.
We will put all efforts to protect the Mekong Riverwhich unites us here today spiritually and physically. We will continue on this journey together until our dreams come true.

You can be involved in the campaign in many different ways ! Please find some options below on how you can show solidarity:
1. With a picture. Post a photo of you, your student groups, as well as other students in this page with the hashtag . Use the symbol of a key to represent unlocking of students, rights and freedom.
You can also make the photos educationally-focused by taking photos of students or professors in front of academic buildings, to illustrate that the world's academic community support the right to freedom of expression for the students in Myanmar. Get creative and spread the campaign!
2. With a video. Film your student group saying one sentence in solidarity to the students in Myanmar, for example: “Release Myanmar Peaceful Students”. Upload it to the page.
3. With a letter. Send letters to the students to show your support and form an international relationship whereby you exhibit awareness of the issues in Myanmar. Tell the students about what your group is doing in the campaign. To ensure that the letters reach the students, please send them to the International Secretariat (Myanmar Team, 1 Easton Street, London, WC1X 0DW, UK), who will forward the letters to the students.
4. Engage famous people: Take a photo/video of an (inter)national or local celebrity/politician with the statement and post it to the page.

In Myanmar people are arrested simply for peacefully expressing their opinions. Help set them...
Today scores of prisoners of conscience languish behind bars, while hundreds of others are facing charges – and prison – simply for the peaceful exercise of their rights.
