~ The Significance of Bak Full Moon Poya Day. ~

In the fifth year of Enlightenment, The Buddha, perceived with His Divine Eye, a dispute was brewing in the island of Sri Lanka, between the two Naga factions between the two Naga communities under the Kings Chulodara and Mahodara. The fascinating story according to Mahawamsa – the great chronicle was that Mahodara, was the ruler of the Naga Kingdom of the sea. His younger sister was given in marriage to a Naga King who was residing on Kannavaddhana mountain. Her son's name was Chulodara.

His beloved mother's father had given to his beloved mother a very valuable magnificent Gem studded throne.

A dispute arose this ultimately ended with a battle between the uncle and nephew. Both were engaged in a tussle to own the Gem studded throne.

It was on Bak Pura Pasaloswaka Poya Day the Enlightened One visited Nagadipa in Northern Sri Lanka to settle the dispute, as peace-maker and preached His doctrine to the Naga community. This was his second visit to the blessed island. The Buddha visited Sri Lanka, accompanied by a deity or deva namely Samiddhisumana.

Peace-loving Buddha, hovering in mid-air above the battlefield of the two Naga factions, first created complete darkness. It was a miracle of the Buddha.

When the Nagas saw the Blessed One in the air, they joyfully worshiped and paid their highest obeisance. They were so pleased, they worshiped Buddha with great respect. The two parties involved in the war listened to the doctrine of Buddha, which highlighted peace and harmony. Both parties were overjoyed. The Blessed One descended to earth, expounded the Jataka stories of Kakoluka (269), Endana Lajukika (352) and Wattaka (35). Noteworthy significance of Buddha's sermons were a strong message. They were adopted the storytelling method to convince his audience. Buddha was a great communicator. The Kakoluka Jataka tale is woven around the controversy between the birds and animals. The Bhikkhus once questioned about the date of controversy among the crows and the owls. The Buddha stated that it began an eon ago. He stated when he was sojourning in the Samsaric journey, as a golden swan, the controversy came to an end.

The Latukika Jataka centered around the evil one, Devadatta. The Bodhisatva, the present Gautama Buddha was born once as the King of an elephant. Ketakirilla, an innocent bird appealed to the king not to damage the eggs. In the forest, there were lonely vicious elephants (Devadatta) who planned to kill the Bodhisatva elephant with the assistance of a frog, a fly (nilamessa) and a crow. On the Bak Poya Day, Buddha ended His tour to Nagadipa by delivering Wattaka Jatakaya, a story of a crow. One of the important lessons that we can learn from the noble life of Compassionate One, is that these teachings convey to all of us that one who conquers through enmity and hatred, suffers, mentally. One who is defeated suffers in pain. Therefore, the lesson that we must learn and follow on this Bak Pura Pasaloswaka Poya Day is that victory brings hatred and the vanquished lives in misery.

To prove this Buddha recited the stanza below to King Kosala, who was defeated by Ajasatta, his own nephew.

"Jayam Veram Pasavati
Dukkaham seti parajito
Upasanto sukham seti
Hitva jayaparajayam"

"Victory gives rise to hatred
Those defected lie in pain
Happily rest the peaceful
Surrendering victory and defeat"

“මහණෙනි, මේ පුද්ගලයෝ සතර දෙනෙක් ලෝකයෙහි ඇත්තාහ. විද්‍යමාන වෙත්. කවර සතර දෙනෙක්ද යත්

“වැරදි සහිත පුද්ගලයාය, වැරදි බහුල පුද්ගලයාය, වැරදි අඩු පුද්ගලයාය, නිවරද පුද්ගලයාය යන සතර දෙනයි.

“මහණෙනි, වැරදි සහිත පුද්ගලයා කවරේද? මහණෙනි, මේ ලෝකයෙහි ඇතැම් පුද්ගලයෙක් වරද සහිත කාය කර්‍මයෙන් යුක්තවූයේ වේද, වරද සහිත වාක් කර්‍මයෙන් යුක්තවූයේ වේද, වරද සහිත මනො කර්‍මයෙන් යුක්තවූයේ වේද, මහණෙනි, මෙසේ මේ පුද්ගල තෙම වරද සහිත වූයේ වේ.

“මහණෙනි, කෙසේ පුද්ගල තෙම වැරදි බොහෝ වූයේ වේද, මහණෙනි, මේ ලෝකයෙහි ඇතැම් පුද්ගලයෙක් බහුල වශයෙන් සාවද්‍ය කාය කර්‍මයෙන් යුක්තවූයේ වේද, නිවැරදිව ස්වල්පද, බහුල වශයෙන් සාවද්‍ය වාක් කර්‍මයෙන් යුක්තවූයේද, නිරවද්‍යව ස්වල්පද, බහුල වශයෙන් සාවද්‍ය මනො කර්‍මයෙන් යුක්තවූයේ වේද, නිවරදව ස්වල්පද, මහණෙනි, මෙසේ වනාහි පුද්ගල තෙම වැරදි බහුල වේ.

ලෝකයේ වෙසෙන සියළුම බෞද්ධයන්ගේ දත්ත එකතු කර බෞද්ධ සමාඡය තුල අන්තර් සබඳතා ගොඩ නගමින් ලෝක වාසි බෞද්ධයන්ගේ අරක්ෂාව අභිවෘද්ධිය සහ තිරස්තිතිය වෙනුවෙන් කල හැකි උපරිමයෙන් කිරිම ලෝක බෞද්ධ ඡාලයේ අරමුණයි.

බෞද්ධ ඡන කොට්ටාශයේ සමාඡ තත්වය, අධ්‍යාපන මට්ටම, අන්නෝන්‍ය සබදතාවය, ගුණ ගරුක භාවය ඉහල නැන්වීමත්, බෞද්ධයින්ගේ ව්‍යප්තිය හා බෞද්ධ දර්ශනයේ ප්‍රචාරණය ලොකය පුරා සිදු කිරිමත් අප ලෝක බෞද්ධ ඡාලයේ උත්සාහයයි.

ස්වභාවදහම සහ අපට දායාද වු ලොකයේ ස්වභාවික පරිසරය ආරක්ෂා කර ගැනීමට කැපවීමත්, මිනිසා අතින් විනාෂ වු පරිසර පද්දතින් නැවතත් යතා තත්වයට පත් කිරිමට ගත හැකි උපරිම වෑයම ලෝක බෞද්ධ ඡාලය වෙත පැවරුනු තවත් වගකිමක් ලෙස දකිමු.

නොයෙකුත් අන්තවාදී ආගමික ප්‍රචන්ඩත්වය හමුවේ බෞද්ධ සමාඡයේ එකමුතු බව සහ එකිනෙකා වෙනුවෙන් පෙනී සිටිමට අවශ්‍යතාවය අවබොධ කර දෙමින් අන්තර් වගකිමක බෞද්ධ ඡන කොට්ටාශය එකතු කිරිම කළ යුතුම දෙයකි.

ගුණධර්මයන් තුල බෞද්ධයින් පුරුදු පුහුණු කරමින් කුඩා ළමුන්ගේ පටන් බෞද්ධ දර්ශනය සහ සමාඡ වගකීම වටහා දෙමින් සමාඡයට ඉතා ගුණදායි මිනිසුන් බිහි කිරිම අප දරනා තවත් වැයමකී.

තර්ඡනයට පත් වු බෞද්ධ රාජ්‍යයන් හැකි සියලුම ශක්තින් යොදවමින් ආරක්ෂා කර ගැනීමත්, එම රාජ්‍යයන් ගේ ඡිවත්වන බෞද්ධයින්ගේ ඕනෑ එපාකම් සොයා බලමින් ඔවුන්ට ඡිවත්වීමට පහසු වටපිටාවක් සදා දිමත් අපගේ ශක්තියයි.

Question: How can we develop mindfulness and Metta (Loving - kindness)?

Than Ajahn: To develop mindfulness you need to have a ‘mindfulness’ object such as your body – movement. Keep watching every movement of your body and your actions. Whatever you do, concentrate on what you do. That’s what it means. Don’t send your mind elsewhere. [For example] when you are brushing your teeth you should watch how you brush your teeth, and not think about other things.

Metta means being friendly with everybody. So when you meet people smile and say 'Hello' and if there is something to share with them, [do share] - when people are happy share it with them. This is what practising Metta (kind) means. Also do not hold a grudge when somebody does something wrong to you.You should forgive them. This is also Metta. Whatever you do, you must not hurt them either physically or mentally. This is what having Metta means. Having a Metta mind means [having] goodwill towards all living beings.

I worship that Buddha, who has the Lokottam and the infinite-knowledge, who has become the Bodhimul and defeated the Sasainya Mar and gained eternal knowledge. Arya Ashtangik is the straight path to entering Mokshpur (Nirvana), this religion is the best and peaceful. I adore that native religion. I worship that association which is pure, best, worthy of charity, shantendriya, without all sin, rich in various qualities and is a decayer.
If I have sinned by words and words, I am asking for forgiveness to the Trinity. The virtue that I have stored through daily food, drink, lamp, perfume, flowers and bandana for the Triratna, as long as I don't get Nirvana, there are types of diseases, kayik punishment, fear, enemies, cleverness, imagination , Sixteen infestation, ten penalties, eighth faults should be destroyed at last. May there be no premature death. Don't be born in the womb of poor parents. Let not be in the company of fools. May not be born in the lowly, in the banks of Chandal, in the poor.
With the effect of this virtue, may the rare human-god-Brahma life be attained in the birth parituma. Wherever it is produced, there should be azu, caste, happiness, ball, wisdom. Be born in Zambudweep. May the Buddha meet in every birth. Let the Kalyan Mitra meet, be born in the upper dynasty and in the banks of Dhanshali. In this birth, any way you get, at last you will meet Nirvana.
