Myanmar YMCA The YMCAs in Myanmar started as early as 1897 in Rangoon. Almost all the leaders at that time were European.

As it was started during the British regime, most of the YMCA programs were to serve the British communities. The National Leadership started around 1940s before independence. The Mandalay YMCA and Taunggyi YMCA were also established. Then Pyin Oo Lwin YMCA and Myitkyina YMCA followed. We mourn the passing of Pope Francis, who died this morning, 21 April, at his residence in the Vatican. 🙏

As head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis inspired over 1.4 billion people worldwide. He will be remembered for his humility, his care for the poor and his efforts to build a more inclusive Church.

World YMCA Secretary General Carlos Sanvee recalls being deeply moved by the Pope’s 2013 visit to migrants in Lampedusa, Sicily, where he denounced the “globalisation of indifference.”

Last April, YMCA Change Agents Victoria Müller and Akin Machado joined their ACM do Rio Grande do Sul colleagues in meeting Pope Francis at the Vatican. They presented him with a handmade crystal, symbolising the fragility of life, hope and the YMCA's care for young people. He blessed it - a gesture that now holds even deeper meaning. At the YMCA Accelerator Summit in Mombasa, Victoria and Akin presented the crystal to Carlos and World YMCA President Soheila Hayek.

Update from Myanmar YMCA following Friday’s devastating earthquake:

More than 2,000 lives have been lost, and widespread destruction has left thousands displaced.

Maung Maung Win, National General Secretary of Myanmar YMCA, shared that critical infrastructure, including bridges, roads, and public buildings, has been heavily damaged or destroyed.

Despite damage to their own offices, staff and volunteers from Mandalay, Naypyitaw, and Taunggyi YMCAs are on the ground, providing critical relief.

We’re working with Myanmar YMCA and the Asia Pacific YMCA to set up a relief fund. Stay tuned for ways to help.

We are deeply saddened by the recent massive earthquake in Mandalay, Sagaing and Naypyitaw, Myanmar which has claimed numerous lives, caused extensive property damages, and displaced thousands of individuals.

In response to this tragic disaster, many of our fellow citizens are in urgent need of immediate support and assistance.

We, the Myanmar Scout Association, in collaboration with Myanmar YMCA, will be launching a humanitarian relief initiative to provide essential aid to those affected.
