The danger of gossip

We’ve all been there: leaning in closer, lowering our voices, and starting a sentence with, "Did you hear...?" At the moment, gossip feels like a social currency. It serves as a means to connect with others, to express frustration, or to feel informed. "But in reality, gossip isn't a bridge; it’s a slow-burning fire that consumes everything it touches.

The danger of gossip lies in its permanence. There is a proverb that compares words to feathers scattered in the wind-once they are out, you can never gather them all back. Even if a story is later proven false, the damage to a person's reputation often lingers.
Gossip not only harms the victim but also poisons the speaker. It trains our minds to hunt for flaws instead of virtues. It creates a culture of suspicion where no one feels safe, because we all know that if someone is gossiping with us, they are likely gossiping about us the moment we leave the room.

The Solution

Therefore how do we stop it? It’s simpler than we think. We can apply the Triple Filter Test. Before you share a story, ask yourself:

Is it true?

Is it kind?

Is it necessary?

If it doesn’t pass all three, let the story end with you. It takes a small person to tear someone down, but it takes a person of character to stay silent. Let’s choose to build a community where reputations are guarded, not traded for a moment of entertainment.
