The Northern Lights 🌌
Read the passage and answer the following questions.📕
The Northern Lights: What Are They?
For centuries, people in the northern parts of the world have watched the sky dance with spectacular curtains of green, pink, and purple light. This breathtaking natural event is known as the Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights. For a long time, its cause was a complete mystery, leading to many myths and legends. Today, however, science can give us a clear explanation for this beautiful phenomenon.
It all begins with the sun. The sun is constantly sending out a stream of electrically charged particles into space. This stream is known as the solar wind. After travelling millions of kilometres, some of these particles reach our planet. Fortunately, the Earth has a powerful magnetic field which protects us from most of this solar radiation. This magnetic field is weakest at the North and South Poles, and it acts like a funnel, pulling the solar particles down into our atmosphere in these polar regions.
The 'magic' happens when these high-energy solar particles collide with atoms and molecules of gas high up in our atmosphere, typically between 100 and 400 kilometres above the Earth's surface. This collision transfers energy to the gas atoms, making them 'excited'. But they cannot stay in this excited state for long. To return to their normal state, they must release this extra energy in the form of tiny flashes of light. When billions of these collisions happen at once, they produce the incredible light show we see from the ground.
The different colours of the aurora are determined by which type of gas is being hit, and at what altitude. The most common colour, a bright green, is produced when solar particles collide with oxygen atoms at about 100 to 300 kilometres high. Red lights, which are rarer, are also caused by oxygen, but at much higher altitudes above 300 kilometres. Pink and dark red colours can be created by nitrogen molecules.
The best places to see the Northern Lights are in the 'auroral zone', which includes countries like Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and parts of Canada and Alaska. They are most visible on clear, dark nights between September and March, when the nights are longest. While scientists can forecast the probability of seeing the aurora, they are a natural phenomenon and can never be completely predictable. This unpredictability is part of what makes seeing them such a special and unforgettable experience. It's a powerful reminder of the dynamic connection between our planet and the sun.
1. What is the primary cause of the Northern Lights?
(A).Electrical activity in the Earth's upper atmosphere.
(B).Energy from the sun hitting gas molecules above Earth.
(C).Moonlight passing through ice crystals in the air.
(D). Storms happening high up in the Earth's atmosphere.
2. What is the function of the Earth's magnetic field in this process?
(A).It makes the lights visible during the daytime.
(B). It creates the solar particles that make the lights.
(C). It pushes the solar wind away from the Earth completely.
(D). It guides the sun's energy towards the extreme north and south.
3. According to the text, how are the different colours of the aurora created?
(A). They depend on what kind of atmosphere the energy hits and how high up.
(B). They depend on the time of year the lights are seen.
(C). They are created by the different colours present in sunlight.
(D). They depend on the strength of the solar wind on a particular night.
4. What produces the most common green colour of the aurora?
(A). Collisions with oxygen atoms at very high altitudes.
(B). Collisions with rare gases in the atmosphere.
(C). Collisions with oxygen atoms at lower altitudes.
(D). Collisions with nitrogen molecules at high altitudes.
5. Which of these statements about seeing the Northern Lights is true?
(A). They are most visible during a full moon because of the extra light.
(B). The best time to see them is on a clear night during the summer months.
(C). Scientists can make predictions, but they're not always accurate.
(D). They can be seen equally well from anywhere in the world.
6. What does the phenomenon of the Northern Lights demonstrate?
(A). The interaction between solar activity and the Earth's magnetic field.
(B). The protective role of the atmosphere against solar radiation.
(C). The weakness of the Earth's atmosphere compared to the sun.
(D). The importance of polar regions for scientific study.

If I Could Live My Life Again...💭
Read the passage and answer the following questions.📕
If I Could Live My Life Again...
It's a classic question often asked in interviews or late-night conversations: "If you could live your life again, what would you do differently?" Of course, it's an impossible fantasy, but thinking about it can give you an interesting perspective on your own life and the choices you've made. With the wisdom and hindsight of my 40 years, here are a few things I would change.
Firstly, I would have worried less about what other people thought of me. When you are young, it feels so important to be popular and to fit in. I remember hesitating to try new hobbies or wear certain clothes because I was afraid of the consequences of being different. If I had been more confident in myself, I would have pursued my interest in theatre and drama instead of choosing a more 'sensible' subject at university. Life is too short to live it according to other people's expectations.
Secondly, I would have travelled more when I had the opportunity and fewer responsibilities. After university, I was offered a chance to teach English in South Korea for a year. I turned it down because I thought it was more important to start my career path immediately. I regret that decision now. If I had taken that year to travel, I'm sure I would have learned so much more about the world and myself than I did in that first year in an office. I've been saving up for a big trip recently, but it's much more difficult to arrange now with a mortgage and a family.
Finally, I would have been kinder to my body. That means I would have eaten less junk food, exercised more regularly, and definitely worn sunscreen every day! When you're 20, you feel invincible, as if you will be young and healthy forever. You don't appreciate your health until you start to lose it.
But does thinking like this actually help? Perhaps not. While it's a fun exercise, it's also true that every decision I've made, good or bad, has led me to where I am today. And I wouldn't trade my current life, my family, and my friends for anything. Maybe the real lesson isn't about wishing you could change the past. Maybe it's about using the wisdom you've gained to appreciate the present and make better choices for the future, starting from now.
1. What is the first thing the writer wishes they had done differently?
(i)Chosen a more sensible subject at university.
(ii)Tried harder to be popular at school.
(iii)Listened more to other people's opinions.
(iv)Been more confident and cared less about fitting in.
2. Why does the writer regret not travelling after university?
(i)Because they wanted to start a career instead.
(ii)Because their friends all went travelling without them.
(iii)Because they didn't have enough money to travel later.
(iv)Because they believe starting a career immediately was the right choice.
3. What does the phrase 'you feel invincible' mean in the context of health?
(i)You take unnecessary risks with your safety.
(ii)You feel like you will never get old or sick.
(iii)You appreciate your health and take care of it.
(iv)You eat a lot of junk food and don't exercise.
4. What is the writer's final conclusion about thinking of the past?
(i)It is a pointless exercise that only causes regret.
(ii)It is impossible because you can never change the past.
(iii)Learn from your mistakes to make better decisions now.
(iv)It helps you identify patterns in your decision-making.
5. Which specific opportunity does the writer mention that they turned down?
(i)An opportunity to travel with their family.
(ii)A job overseas after finishing university.
(iii)A promotion at their first office job.
(iv)A chance to study theatre and drama.
6. In the end, how does the writer feel about their current life?
(i)They're happy with how things turned out.
(ii)They feel it is boring compared to the life they could have had.
(iii)They are unhappy with the consequences of their past decisions.
(iv)They accept it but still have significant regrets.

Gen Z Pursuits 🔍
Read the passage and answer the following questions.📕
Gen Z Pursuits
A. E-Sports - Described by Leo
It might look like we are just playing video games, but competitive e-sports is a serious discipline. Professional players train for hours every day, just like traditional athletes, developing lightning-fast reflexes and complex strategic thinking. It is a mental marathon, not a physical one. Millions of people watch major tournaments over the internet, following their favourite teams and players. The appeal is the incredible level of skill on display. It requires intense focus and teamwork that is just as valid as any physical sport, and the excitement of a close final is unbelievable.
B. Cycle Ball - Described by Sara
Imagine playing football, but everyone is riding a specially designed bicycle with no brakes. That is cycle ball. It is usually played indoors with teams of two. You are not allowed to touch the ball with your hands or feet; you have to control and shoot the ball using the wheels of your bike, or your head. It requires an extraordinary amount of balance and technical skill. It is incredibly fast-paced and amazing to watch. People are always surprised by how much control and power the players can generate using just their bikes.
C. Speed Cubing - Described by Dan
The goal of speed cubing is simple: solve a Rubik's Cube as fast as humanly possible. But behind that simple goal is a world of complexity. We do not solve it by guessing; we memorise hundreds of specific sequences of moves, called algorithms, for every possible scramble. It is all about pattern recognition and muscle memory. You have to train your hands to perform the moves without thinking. It is an individual pursuit, and the real competition is against the clock and your own previous records. It is a test of memory, dexterity, and intense mental focus.
D. Quidditch - Described by Freya
Yes, it is the sport from the Harry Potter books, but it has been adapted for the real world and is now played at universities all over the globe. It is a full-contact, mixed-gender sport that combines elements of rugby, basketball, and dodgeball. A team scores points by throwing a ball through one of three hoops, while also trying to avoid being hit by other balls. The game has a unique rule that creates a level playing field between athletes of different strengths and speeds. It is incredibly strategic and physically demanding, but it also has a wonderful sense of community.

Abraham Lincoln 🇺🇸
Read the passage and answer the following questions.📕
Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in Hodgenville, Kentucky, USA. His parents were Thomas Lincoln, a farmer, and Nancy Hanks. His family was very poor. Abraham had one brother and one sister. His brother died in childhood. They grew up in a small log cabin house, with just one room inside.
Although slavery was legal in Kentucky at that time, Lincoln's father, who was a religious Baptist, refused to own any slaves. When Lincoln was seven years old, his family moved to Indiana, and later to Illinois. In his childhood he helped his father on the farm, but when he was 22 years old he left home and moved to New Salem, Illinois, where he worked in a general store. Later, he said that he had gone to school for just one year, but that was enough to learn how to read, write, and do simple math.
In 1842, he married Mary Todd Lincoln. They had four children, but three of them died when they were very young. Abraham Lincoln was sometimes called Abe Lincoln or "Honest Abe" after he ran miles to give a costumer the right amount of change. The nickname "Honest Abe" came from a time when he started a business that failed. Instead of running away like many people would have, he stayed and worked to pay off his debt.
He has also been called the "Great Emancipator" because of his work to end slavery in the United States. In 1863, he declared that all slaves held in the rebellious Confederate States were free. He also sponsored the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Ratified in 1865, nine months after his assassination, that amendment completely outlawed slavery in the United States.

Aunt Helen's House 🛖
Read the passage and answer the following questions.📕
I'm going to tell you about my Aunt Helen's house. It's not her main house, that's in the city. No, this house is by the lake. There was a small town by the lake called Miller's Ford, but all the people moved away when the fishing and mining stopped about sixty years ago. But the houses stayed, of course. My Aunt Helen uses that house as a vacation home and she goes there for a few weeks every year to relax.
But staying in that house isn't a relaxing experience. I think the house is haunted! I think there's a ghost there from many many years ago. Helen says I'm silly and that I've got an over-active imagination. But there are many things that happen in that house that cannot be easily explained.
One day, shortly after getting up, I went to find my Aunt Helen to say "good morning" and I heard her talking in a room that she usually never uses. I think it used to be the nursery of the house when Miller's Ford was a busy town in the 19th Century. I listened at the door and could hear Helen reading something out, or perhaps she was dictating a letter. I couldn't hear any other person in the room with her so it wasn't a normal conversation. I didn't want to disturb my aunt, so I went back downstairs and went to make breakfast in the kitchen, which I ate on the porch that overlooked the lake. It was a beautiful sunny morning. Half an hour later, I heard my aunt's car arriving. She had been to the local store to buy some bread and milk. I couldn't believe it!
"What are you looking so shocked for?" she asked me.
"I thought you were in the old nursery, working on your letters, Auntie," I replied.
"I never go in that room," she said. "I haven't been in that room for fifteen years."
A few other things like that happened over the next few visits I made to that house and I grew to dislike it very much. Then, one day in my local library, I found a story in an old newspaper with the title "The Constant Babysitter". The story was that a baby had died in one of the houses by the lake at Miller's Ford and the babysitter was blamed, a woman of 37 who was a family friend and had offered to look after the baby. But she spent all her time in the kitchen writing her letters and didn't know that someone had climbed in the baby's window and taken her. The baby was never found. The woman killed herself through depression after the baby's disappearance and local people then said her ghost stayed very close to where the baby was left by the parents - in the nursery.
I never went back to that house, despite my Aunt Helen's many invitations.

Eating Out 🍽️
Here are four people talking about eating out. After you read, answer each question with a paragraph number (1-4).
1.The last time I went to a restaurant was about 2 months ago. My wife and I wanted to celebrate our wedding anniversary with a good meal so we went to an expensive Italian restaurant in downtown Lisbon. We both had pasta to start and for the main course my wife ordered a steak and I chose fish. For dessert we both ate chocolate cake topped with fresh cream. Delicious!
2. I went to a restaurant yesterday evening with my sister's children. It wasn't very expensive and the menu was very limited. We all had a burger and French fries, and drank cola. It wasn't very good.
3. My boyfriend loves spicy food so this restaurant was perfect. The waiters were all really friendly and polite, and they played traditional sitar music which was very relaxing. The menu offered vegetarian dishes as well as meat dishes served with rice and a sauce - it depended on how hot you wanted it! I chose a mild beef curry but my boyfriend had a lamb 'vindaloo' - he also drank 2 liters of water!!
4. My class at the university went there last weekend. It's a very popular type of restaurant in my country. It generally offers one type of food (a kind of bread with cheese and tomato sauce) which you then choose what ingredients to add on top of it. I asked for olives and mushrooms on mine and my classmates each had something different so we could taste a piece of each person's meal.
1. In which text did the person go there for a special occasion?
2. In which text did the person visit an Indian restaurant?
3. In which text did the person eat pizza?
4. In which text did the person eat fast food?
5. In which text did someone eat seafood?
6. In which text did the person talk about the atmosphere of the restaurant?
7. Which restaurant was cheap?
8. In which text didn't the person enjoy their meal?
9. In which text did someone eat a very hot dish?
10. In which text did the person have a vegetarian meal?
