Teacher Development Course ( 30 October - 3 November, 2023)

THE (HE)ART OF CREATIVE TEACHING

Lotus Garden has been pioneering a new approach to teaching children in Myanmar for a few years now. As the school continues to grow, we continually need people with the courage, openness and passion to join us on our journey towards a new vision for education and a new future.

If you share this intention and can imagine yourself as a part of our school, we would love to see you at our next Teacher Development course at the end of this month.

The course will be very hands-on, with workshops in drawing, painting, movement and music complementing work on new ways of teaching traditionally academic subjects. Certainly, it will be different from any teacher training you have encountered before. So, take the plunge and join us.

Where: Lotus Garden School, May Myo/Pyin Oo Lwin

When: Monday 30th October 9am to Friday 3rd November 1pm

For: those open to a new way of seeing and practising the vocation of teaching, who are seriously interested in becoming a part of our school.

What you need: more important than formal qualifications are the willingness to unlearn, relearn and learn new things, the commitment to one’s own inner development and inner growth and, of course, joy in being around children. Further teacher training will be necessary for those who do become part of our team.

The emphasis of the course will be on ‘doing’, so wear clothing you can move freely in. Art materials will be provided at the various workshops. If you have never picked up a crayon or paintbrush do not be put off. No particular artistic skills are required to join the course although if you have certain artistic skills, that will be a bonus.

Fee: 350,000 MMK per person

Course leaders: workshops will be led by a variety of foreign and national trainers, in English and Burmese.

A GUIDE TO EACH DAY OF THE COURSE

Day 1 A different consciousness.

Can we identify what children are asking of us? Can a misguided education cause harm?

What does it mean to teach children out of imagination and why does it matter?
Understanding the nature of child development in broader terms than simply intellectual and physical development, we can develop a methodology and curriculum that is sensitive to what children need at different times on their journeys through childhood.

Through artistic workshops, we will look at how language skills and maths work can be powerfully enhanced by a more imaginative approach to the work of the teacher.

Day 2 A different gesture.

Working with colour in painting we will develop an appreciation of what it means in practice to move away from the teacher imposing their will on the children to the teacher supporting the children in taking their next step for themselves.

Working with form in form drawing we will experience how the character of the children is strengthened not through admonition but the simple truth of straight lines and curves!

Day 3 A different way of seeing the child.

We grow as people through the light and warmth of the loving attention of others. Standardised testing can act as a poor proxy for such attention of the teacher, yet still, such tests remain the central pillar of schools’ assessment methods. We can do better than this if we broaden our perspective on the nature of child development and develop our skills at perceiving the child in all aspects of his/her development.

Through movement and artistic activities, we will discover ways of ‘reading’ what the children in our care need to make the next step in their development.

Day 4 A different responsibility.

We are living in a time of great change, bringing new opportunities and challenges. How do we prepare children for this uncertain future? How do we foster the courage and resilience they will need to allow them to bring positive change into the world? What does providing such an education demand of the teacher?

Through looking at various subjects in the curriculum in a new light we will explore what becoming part of this movement for educational change could mean for your own development as both a teacher and human being.

Day 5 A different future.

Making sense of it all! Through sharing questions, hopes and intentions we will explore what the next steps may be as we chart a different course into the future.
This is also the bit where we give the course leader a box of dark chocolates.😄
