CAN–Myanmar is proud to have collaborated with the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator – Myanmar in contributing vital information to the UN Secretary-General’s 2024 Report on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence.

The Myanmar section (paras. 45–50) documents ongoing patterns and trends of CRSV, amplifying the voices and experiences of survivors that must never be silenced.

We will soon share a Myanmar-language translation of this section so our communities can fully access and understand these findings.

📢 Joint Statement Summary

Myanmar LGBTIQ Organizations Reject 2025 Military-Orchestrated Elections
📅 5 August 2025

Issued by:
🔹 CAN-Myanmar
🔹 LGBTI-Inclusive Election Observation Mission of Myanmar
🔹 Coalition of LGBTIQ Organizations under the Electoral Sector during the Democratic Transition of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (CLOES-DTRUM)

Three leading LGBTIQ and democracy-focused organizations in Myanmar have jointly declared their firm rejection of the Myanmar military’s planned 2025 elections, describing them as illegitimate, exclusionary, and a threat to democratic restoration.

With a proven track record in voter education, civic participation, and inclusive election observation during Myanmar’s 2015, 2018, and 2020 elections, these organizations assert that:

🔴 The 2025 electoral process, orchestrated by a junta that came to power through unconstitutional and violent means,
🔴 Lacks credibility, inclusivity, and transparency,
🔴 And does not reflect the will of the people.

They reaffirm that they will not participate in, support, or legitimize any initiative or process linked to these sham elections, and call on the international community to reject attempts to normalize military rule.

“Democracy in Myanmar must be restored by its people—not imposed by force.
We remain committed to inclusive, civilian-led governance grounded in human rights and dignity for all.”

LGBTQIAN+ Persons Should Not Be Left Behind: A call for an inclusive emergency response to the complex crisis in Myanmar 03/04/2025

LGBTQIAN+ Persons Should Not Be Left Behind: A call for an inclusive emergency response to the complex crisis in Myanmar

We, various LGBTQIAN+ civil society organizations, and allies from across Asia express our deepest concern for all communities and families affected by the deadly earthquake that shook Myanmar and neighboring countries in Asia. In this time of global political and economic crisis, we understand that the loss of lives, of property, and its serious impacts on well-being run deep and may have long-term impacts.
We are collectively facing a complex crisis in Myanmar. Despite thousands of lives lost in the earthquake-hit areas, we are concerned that military violence, including military airstrikes, has never ceased. The junta’s conduct of air strikes in the aftermath of the earthquake is deplorable. On top of this, the military junta continues to enforce restrictions that hinder independent humanitarian actors from reaching out to, and delivering the needed services in badly affected areas.
We call upon humanitarian and aid organizations to take immediate and inclusive action to support all those affected by this devastating calamity. In this time of crisis, it is imperative that the specific concerns and vulnerabilities faced by LGBTQIAN+ individuals are recognized and addressed. Foremost of which is the pervasive social stigma and their invisibilization in the humanitarian system.
LGBTQIAN+ individuals in Myanmar urgently require assistance to meet their immediate needs. Key support needed includes:
* Ready-to-eat food
* Drinking water and sanitation
* Medicines and medical care
* Psychosocial assistance
* Electricity, internet and telecommunications access
* Hormonal treatment for trans and non-binary persons
* Sanitary pads for assigned female at birth (AFAB) people and other gender sensitive care.
* ART for people who live with HIV.
* Safe shelters that are inclusive to trans and non-binary people
* Mosquito nets, mosquito repellents
In a time of complex crisis, humanitarian response will be effective when there is a situation of peace. We demand a ceasefire, the lifting of military surveillance and control, the provision of access to international humanitarian assistance, and the acceleration of rescue operations in the affected areas.
LGBTQIAN+ people are part of the fabric of Myanmar despite the military's continuous efforts in their erasure, and are equally vulnerable in this crisis. We implore organizations to actively consider the specific needs and safety of LGBTQIAN+ individuals in their relief efforts, ensuring equitable access to shelter, food, healthcare, and all forms of assistance. An inclusive humanitarian response is not just ethical, it is essential for effectively reaching and supporting everyone in need.

Myanmar Input: Protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in relation to forced displacement

We aim to highlight the urgent need for protection against violence and discrimination faced by individuals due to their sexual orientation and gender identity, particularly in the context of forced displacement in Myanmar. This essential information will contribute to U.N IE SOGI Mr. Graeme Reid's upcoming report for the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council, advocating for the rights and dignity of all people, regardless of their identity. Let's work together to promote a future where everyone can live without fear and discrimination.

“I am grateful to Pope Francis that he was willing to listen to the experiences of intersex and transgender people,” said New Ways Ministry cofounder Sister Jeannine Gramick.

“It is only by listening to stories of these individuals, as well as the individuals who care for and about them, that the Church will be able to fully hear the voice of the Holy Spirit calling the Catholic community to break out of old, ill-informed teachings and practices,” she added.

How do you feel about the Pope’s engagement of transgender Catholics? Let’s talk in the faith chat room of the Rappler Communities app: https://rplr.co/FaithChat
