1. use your face to face communication skills
the face to face interview is when the employer will decide if they think you’re right for the job, and the right fit within their company. but it’s also a chance for you to decide if you think you would want to work for their company.

a face to face interview is the perfect opportunity for you to show off your communication skills. employers will be looking out for what you say, but also how well you answer their questions and how you communicate your response.

one of my top tips for interview is to make sure you speak clearly and try not to go off on tangents about things that aren’t relevant. you want to convey enthusiasm, sound upbeat and keen on the job role that’s being offered. if you want to know how to be successful in an interview, this starts with how well you communicate yourself, and demonstrate your relevant skills and experience.

2. do your research
this one sounds obvious; but it’s surprising how many people neglect to do this when they are preparing for a face to face interview. make sure you’ve read through the company’s website and have a few snippets of information about it ready to drop into the conversation – this might be case studies that you really liked, or a particular blog that resonated with you.

not only does this show that you’re proactive, but it also shows that you really are interested in what the company does (and you’re not just applying to any graduate job). it’s also a good idea to research the employer too, so don’t be scared to look them up on linkedin.

when preparing for a face to face interview, make sure that you’ve also read the job description a number of times, and try to mention the requirements in your answers as much as possible. one of the best interview tips i can give is to do your preparation - make sure you've prepared your answers to common interview questions, too.

3. use real-world examples in your answers to interview questions
you can almost guarantee that you’ll be given some situation-based competency interview questions, like ‘tell me about a time you had to deal with a stressful situation’.

these questions are your chance to shine and prove that you are suitable for the job, based on experience and skills you have gained in previous graduate jobs or through your education.

make sure you prepare some examples for these sorts of interview questions and have some experiences to hand that you can talk about. for example, if you worked part-time while at university in a restaurant, you could talk about when you had to deal with stressful busy times in the restaurant and what you did to ensure full customer satisfaction.

as a rule, don’t ever say ‘i don’t know’ or ‘pass’. one of the best tips for interview is to ensure you're ready for all types of interview questions, and know how to an face interview head on.

4. ask the employer questions
at the end of a graduate job interview, an employer will always ask "do you have any questions for me?" your answer should always be ‘yes’ and you should always ask at least three questions. some good questions to keep in your back pocket include:

‘what are the next steps?’
‘what’s your most and least favourite part of your job’
‘what’s your company culture like?’.
as a general rule, avoid asking basic questions like ‘can i wear what i want to work?’, ‘what does your company do?’ and ‘how long until i’m promoted?’. top tips for interview success, especially in a face to face interview, is to show you are engaged and interested; asking the employer interview questions is a great way to demonstrate this.

read the full guide to answering the question 'do you have any questions for me?' here.

5. wear a smart interview outfit
unless an interviewer tells you that it’s okay to dress casually for an interview, you should always make sure that you’re dressed smartly. this is the first time that an interviewer will see you, and you want to make the right impression.
looking sloppy or like you haven’t made any effort will give the wrong impression straight away. it doesn’t have to be expensive, just an outfit that looks clean, smart and tidy. you only need one outfit that you can wear to any graduate job interview.

this is one of my top tips for interviews - never underestimate the power of a first impression!

6. be yourself in a face to face interview
my final top tip for interviews; you’ve made it this far because the company likes you and your experience, so it’s really important to be yourself.

it might also be the only time you meet those in the company face to face before starting the job, so you want them to buy into the authentic version of you, rather than a fake, interview-only version.

then, if you don’t get on, you know it’s not going to be the right job for you anyway - and there are plenty of other graduate jobs out there. going into a face to face interview with this knowledge should help to reassure you that you don't have to try and be someone you're not; this is one of the most important tips for a job interview.

preparing for a face to face interview checklist

if you've got to the face to face interview stage, you need to make sure you've done all your interview preparation. read our interview preparation checklist & tips to a successful interview below:

make sure you know what type of interview it is there are many different types of face to face interviews, and although it will usually be a sit down chat through your cv, it could be that you have to prepare a presentation, task, or interview with a panel. ensure that you know how to master different types of interviews.
prepare your answers to interview questions - make sure you've gone through all types of questions that could be asked, including thinking up questions to ask employers in a job interview brush up on your graduate cv - it might seem obvious, but you need to know exactly what's on your graduate cv in order to talk about your skills & experience. for every thing you've written on your cv, make sure you're able to speak in more detail about it in the interview dress for success - pick out your interview outfit beforehand, so you're not stressing on the day. there are slightly different ways to dress depending on the type of interview - so again, do your research plan your commute - the last thing you want to be doing on the day of the face to face interview is stressing about being late; so plan how you're going to get to the interview well in advance, and remember to account for rush hour!

*sample questions & answers*

🔸tell me something about yourself. the question seems very simple and direct to the point. your answer though to this question will set the course of the interview. from this very simple question, interviewers can likely guess at whether you are a good candidate or not so please do not take this question for granted. most applicants will answer this call center interview question with information already found on their resumes like their name, address, and school information. do not make this mistake. when being asked this question, you are supposed to answer with information not found on your resume.

🔸why did you leave your last job? i wanted a new opportunity where i could learn new things and grow my career, but also where i could work more directly with people; i wanted to find something more challenging where i could perfect and develop new skills.

🔸what is your idea of a call center? my idea of a call center is that it is a place where people take calls from customers and deliver superb customer service experience. i know that the people who work for call centers are extremely flexible people who adapt to different cultures, different people, and different schedules all at the same time.

🔸why do you want to work in a call center? i’d like to work in a call center because i have the skills to match the ones needed for this job. i graduated as a nursing student and during our on-the-job training, i learned a lot about communication skills and how to deal with people. as a nursing graduate, i am skillful in dealing with difficult people and patient in working with irate clients. in my course, we were taught how to be good listeners which i know, is a very valuable skill in this industry. another reason i want to work for a call center is because i know that the benefits and pay in the call center industry are better compared to those in other industries. i also know from my friends that the chances of career growth in this industry are high. in the past, i have heard of people getting promoted overnight.

🔸what are your strengths and weaknesses? i am a very patient person capable of dealing with irate and demanding customers. i can think out of the box, so i have exceptional problem-solving skills. i have good communications skills, and i can learn how to operate new computer programs very fast. i am a team player, and i get along with people very well. those are my strengths. as for my weaknesses, i guess my biggest weakness is working too much and not knowing when to stop. i would say that this is a weakness because sometimes, i would render too much over time that it becomes detrimental to my health.

🔸what makes you qualified to work in a call center? i am qualified to work in a call center because i possess qualities which makes one a good call center agent or customer service representative. i am very flexible; i don’t have complaints with shift work or working at nights and with split days off. i am willing to learn, and i am not intimidated with learning new things. i am very patient, and i know how to deal with stress. i believe that these qualities make me qualified to work in a call center.

🔸why do you want to work for our company? i have heard nothing but good things about this company from people who have worked here. people say that the accounts here are very stable, the management is kind to its employees, and everyone is friendly.

🔸what has been your most significant achievement? my most significant achievement would have to be graduating from college. i say this because for four years, i have labored so much to get good grades and recognition and it all culminated in my achievement of a college diploma.

🔸give me one quality that you have which will not make me hire you. a lot of my friends say that i am a perfectionist. i never consider something done as long as i don’t find it perfect.

in my previous job, i sometimes would go on over time just to make sure that i complete all my tasks; and they are done to perfection. i show up for work every day, and i am never late. i remember that when i was still in school, i never missed an assignment or a project. i also remember that whenever we were tasked to come up with a play, i would always be the one who would be insisting that we practice three times a week, and all my classmates would complain and get mad at me saying that they only want to practice once a week. being a perfectionist can be bad especially when the people around you are lazy but i believe that in certain situations, it can be a valuable trait.

🔸how do you see yourself five years from now? i see myself working for this same company but with a higher position.

🔸what are your goals in life? my short term goal is to have a stable job with this company. after working for a couple of years with this company, i would like to see myself take on more responsibilities like maybe become a supervisor or a trainer. meanwhile, my long goal is to have an upper management level position with this company.

🔸what do you know about this company? i know that this company is one of the leading companies in the call center industry. you have several sites in the world. i also happen to know that most of the accounts in this call center company are very stable because this is what my friends who work here tell me.

🔸what is your idea of quality customer service? my idea of quality customer service is going out of your way or going the extra mile to provide customer service or to help customers. it is not simply providing assistance according to what you are expected of.

🔸what is your expected salary? whatever amount you give to people with my qualifications would be fine. i am willing to work on your offer per your company’s policy.

🔸what motivates you to perform a job better? appreciation and a friendly workplace environment.

🔸why should we hire you? i have all the qualities that a good call center agent or customer service representative should possess. i am punctual, disciplined, patient, and flexible, and organized. you won’t have any problems with me when it comes to attendance and my behavior. i have good communication skills, multi-tasking skills, and i am a fast learner. i can guarantee you that i will be able to deliver what is being asked of me, and i will give my one hundred percent to this company. i know that i have what it takes to become a good customer service representative.
