The Belief Committee (Upāsaka / Upāsikā)
Purpose:
Before entering the Chanting Committee at the Buddha Palace, every visitor who wishes to become a Buddhist should complete the following four steps.
🙏🏻 First Step: Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels (Tisaraṇa)
Before entering the chanting room, recite the Three Refuges.
Pāli
Buddhaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
Dhammaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
Saṅghaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
English
I take refuge in the Buddha.
I take refuge in the Dhamma.
I take refuge in the Saṅgha.
By sincerely reciting these Three Refuges with confidence, one formally declares oneself a Buddhist.
🙏🏻 Second Step: Undertaking the Five Precepts (Pañca Sīla)
Recite the Five Precepts.

Pāṇātipātā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
Adinnādānā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
Kāmesu micchācārā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
Musāvādā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
Surāmeraya-majjapamādaṭṭhānā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.

I undertake the training rule to refrain from taking life.
I undertake the training rule to refrain from taking what is not given.
I undertake the training rule to refrain from sexual misconduct.
I undertake the training rule to refrain from false speech.
I undertake the training rule to refrain from intoxicating drinks and drugs that cause heedlessness.
🙏🏻 Third Step: Right Livelihood (Five Trades to Avoid)
The Buddha taught that lay followers should avoid these five kinds of livelihood:
Trading in weapons.
Trading in human beings.
Trading in meat.
Trading in alcoholic beverages.
Trading in poisons.
The applicant acknowledges and agrees to avoid these five forms of livelihood.
🙏🏻 Fourth Step: Registration
After completing the Three Refuges, the Five Precepts, and the acknowledgment of Right Livelihood, register with the Belief Committee Administrator at the Buddha Palace.
Upon successful registration, you will be recognized as a registered Buddhist visitor and may proceed to the Chanting Committee.

After completing all four steps of the Belief Committee, you may enter the Chanting Committee to worship the Seven Lord Buddhas and participate in chanting the Buddha Vacana.
