A very interesting concept.

Zone of Proximal Development

Zone of proximal development" (ZPD) is a concept in educational psychology that describes the gap between what a learner can currently do independently and what they can achieve with guidance from a more knowledgeable person, like a teacher or peer, essentially representing the potential for learning within a specific range of abilities with appropriate support.

Key points about the ZPD:

Originator: This concept was developed by Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky.

Social learning emphasis: ZPD highlights the importance of social interaction and collaboration in learning, as individuals progress most effectively when supported by others with more knowledge.

Scaffolding: The idea of "scaffolding" is closely linked to ZPD, which refers to the temporary support provided by a teacher or mentor to help a learner complete a task within their ZPD.

Example: Imagine a child who can tie simple knots but struggles with tying shoelaces. Their ZPD would be the space where they could learn to tie shoelaces with the help of an adult demonstrating and guiding them through the steps.
