Have you ever wondered whether the air inside your home is actually cleaner than the air outside? The answer might surprise you. A newly accepted study by researchers from the Environment and Health Group (EHG) at the Max van der Stoel Institute and University of Birmingham explored this question by monitoring indoor and outdoor air pollution in a household in Tetovo, one of Europe’s most polluted cities. Using low-cost air quality sensors, the study examined how pollution from traffic, heating, and everyday household activities affects the air people breathe both inside and outside their homes.

The findings showed that outdoor pollution has a strong influence on indoor air quality, especially for fine particles that can enter homes from outside. At the same time, indoor activities such as heating, cooking, and daily movement were found to significantly affect larger particles indoors. The study highlights the importance of understanding indoor-outdoor air pollution dynamics in North Macedonia and demonstrates how affordable monitoring technologies can support air quality research in regions with limited monitoring infrastructure.
