This project is aimed toward the establishment of an English Resource Center, with the objective of creating a place to motivate and support young English learners in the school, as well as provide a new working environment to be utilized by the school's teachers. A small classroom on the third floor of the school has been appointed for the center, and community members, such as parents, will be i
nvolved in the renovation of the classroom to make it a more comfortable and vibrant learning environment. The center will be equipped with new electronics (e.g. television and video camera) as well as with new furniture and will tie into the school's curriculum through its use in after-school English classes, English clubs, and winter break English workshops. The English clubs will be led by the English teachers, who will be assisted by the Peace Corps volunteer for as long as there is one at the school. They will meet minimum once a week for an hour each time, and will be used to further improve the English ability of the students as well as give them a more varied opportunity to practice their English. The clubs will directly use the resource center in a variety of ways - the room itself is where the clubs will be held, and different resources will be used depending on the club. The students will use the English books to practice their reading comprehension skills and then write book reports, which will be posted in the room for other students to read. The computer and television will be used to view English videos for listening comprehension and prediction practice. The computer, web camera, and microphone will be used to converse with native English speakers, such as partner classes in America. The board games will allow the students to use their English in a fun way while practicing their creative thinking skills. According to student interests, as stated in classroom discussions and informal conversations, it will also include interactive games and a small library in order to promote more diverse uses of English. Thus, the project will increase student interest in learning English as well as doing creative extra-curricular activities and exploring American culture via educational videos and other multimedia.
