What is the Story Behind May 1?

May 1, also known as Labor Day or International Workers’ Day, began with a simple but powerful demand: workers wanted a fairer life.

In the 1800s, many factory workers worked very long hours, sometimes 10 to 16 hours a day, with little rest. In 1886, workers in Chicago gathered to ask for an 8-hour workday: 8 hours for work, 8 hours for rest, and 8 hours for family and personal life.

One of the most remembered events happened at Haymarket Square. What began as a workers’ meeting became a tragic moment in history, but it also became a symbol of courage, justice, and the dignity of work.

Today, May 1 reminds us to respect every honest worker: teachers, educators, farmers, cleaners, builders, drivers, nurses, office workers, parents, and many others. Every good work matters because it helps serve people and build the community.

Happy Labor Day.

Meet Our Class: Erdkinder

In Erdkinder, students learn through real-life projects.

This week, they are working on sewing and handmade creations. Through this activity, they develop patience, creativity, focus, problem-solving, and practical life skills.

Their creations will be presented during Exhibition Day, where students will also learn how handmade work can have value in a small business setting. This is part of their Kidpreneurship program.

Learning by doing.
Creating with purpose.
Growing with responsibility.

Graduation is more than a cap, a gown, and a certificate.

At Ayhay Christian School, Graduation Day celebrates growth, readiness, and the completion of an educational division: Preschool, Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, or Erdkinder.

It is our way of saying: “You have grown. You are ready for the next stage.” 🎉

Erdkinder is a German word meaning “children of the earth” or “land children.” In Montessori education, it refers to the adolescent community, usually for ages 12–15, where students learn through meaningful work, responsibility, community life, and a deep connection with nature and the real world.

At Ayhay Christian School, our Erdkinder class helps adolescents grow through real experiences, practical work, environmental care, and purposeful projects. It is a learning community designed to nurture responsible, capable, and thoughtful young people as they prepare for adult life with confidence, character, and a heart to serve.

“He is risen!” - Matthew 28:6
A simple painting, a beautiful craft, a powerful message.

Jesus stands at the door and knocks.
This Easter, our students remind us: will we open the door? Because Easter is not only a celebration, it is an invitation.

Happy Easter!

👏 Congratulations to Rakotoarisoa Maminiaina Marie Larissa!

We are proud to see Larissa, a former volunteer team member at Ayhay Christian School, selected for the Community Engagement Exchange (CEE) Program 2026.

We remember her as a dedicated dance teacher for our preschool children, serving with joy and care. Today, she takes a new step, growing in leadership and learning skills that will empower young people and communities.

Her journey is a beautiful reminder that serving with a heart can lead to greater impact.

We are proud of you, Larissa. Keep shining!

March 29, 1947, A Day of Memory and Courage

On March 29, 1947, a major uprising against French Colonial rule began in Madagascar, marking a powerful moment in the nation’s journey toward freedom.

Led by figures such as Joseph Raseta, Joseph Ravoahangy, and Jacques Rabemananjara, many Malagasy stood with courage and conviction.

The movement spread across the island, but it was met with severe repression.
Many lives were lost, including in tragic events such as in Moramanga, Madagascar.

Today, March 29, is a day of remembrance.

A day to honor courage, reflect on sacrifice, and remember the cost of freedom.
At Ayhay, we believe in raising a generation that knows its history, honors its roots, and builds the future with wisdom and integrity.

We remember. We honor. We build.

(John 12:13)

A day of joy,
a King of peace.

As we marked International Women’s Day, our women community gathered for a women’s fellowship with a Raffia Workshop.

International Women’s Day began more than a century ago when women organized and spoke up for fair working conditions, equal pay, and the right to participate in society. It is a day to remember the courage of those who worked for justice and dignity.

Our raffia workshop became a simple but meaningful way to reflect on this purpose. While working with raffia, an important craft tradition of Madagascar. We took time to recognize the skills, contributions, and resilience of women in our community.

Through moments like these, we remember that the spirit of this day is about respect, fairness, and equal opportunity for women everywhere.

Kudos to the Raffia Ladies, Jessica Razanadrakoto, and all the women of Ayhay’s community ❤️

Honoring the women whose strength, wisdom, and dedication shape our families, our communities, and the next generation.

Kudos for making these happen during Women’s Fellowship at Ayhay.

In a world that pushes women to do more and have more, true strength is often found in balance.

The spirit of minimalism reminds us that many material things will fade with time. But the moments we share with our children; the laughter, the conversations, the presence; will last much longer.

Sometimes the most important choice is simply being there.

Choose what truly matters. Choose the moments that remain.

Kudos to Holy Razafindrandretsa for these empowering words.
