In 2021 Government of Montenegro decided to declare the area of the Nature Park Platamuni as the first protected marine area in Montenegro.

The area of the Nature Park Platamuni encompasses part of the coastal sea with the corresponding shoreline between Trašte Bay – Cape Žabica in the northwest and Cape Platamuni near Ploče Beach in the southeast, aiming to protect the designated and ecologically significant marine and coastal species and habitats.

Within the Platamuni area, there are important habitats for the protected seagrass species Posidonia oceanica. Additionally, the marine caves near Cape Platamuni and in Velika Krekavica Bay are noteworthy, with the Velika Krekavica cave representing an exceptionally important habitat containing diverse coraligenous organisms.

The Sea as a Stage of Geopolitics and Human Impact

The New Adriatic Atlas, supported by the British Council, is essentially a research process into the strategic forces that have shaped the Adriatic region. Historically, water connected where land divided, and traveling by sea was easier than traveling over land. Although the world has changed in the meantime, this strategic stage remains active — the sea still largely defines relations between states; it continues to govern, set rules, and write geopolitics. As humanity, we exploit, protect, extract from, and defend the sea more than ever before. For humankind, the sea is far more than the endless blue that is our first association when we think of it.

NEW ADRIATIC ATLAS LAUNCH

After months of tracing coastlines, decoding layers of data, and listening closely to the hidden stories of the sea, we are proud to present the New Adriatic Atlas, supported by the British Council. This work transforms complex geographies and human impacts into clear, compelling visual narratives that invite reflection, understanding, and action.
The methodology of the New Adriatic Atlas is grounded in the rigorous translation of raw geospatial data into meaningful, readable maps that later evolve into powerful illustrated narratives—where mapping becomes a form of visual art. Built on deep research, precise data analysis, and countless hours of demanding, meticulous work, the project reveals hidden dynamics shaping the Adriatic. Its ultimate goal is to provide highly valuable insights for geopolitics, environmental understanding, and human impact across the Adriatic basin.

The work has been led by Dijana Vučinić and Ana Dobrašinović artistic direction and graphic design by Luka Bošković, and cartographic illustration by Snežana Zlatković whose vision and dedication guided every stage of the process. Stay tuned for more insights—we’ll be revealing the full story in Montenegro on Friday, 26th.

We’ve been working hard on our New Adriatic Atlas, diving deep into GIS and CAD - which we love the most. We’re always amazed by how small the world becomes through the CAD lens. Stay tuned for the project finale in December!

The project NEW ADRIATIC ATLAS, supported by the British Council, brings together architects, researchers, and artists to create a comprehensive new atlas of the Adriatic Sea-unveiling the hidden Anthropocene, shifting geographies, and other human interventions beneath its surface. This research, presented through a series of data-rich maps, will highlight various aspects of human intervention within the sea, including shipwrecks, infrastructure, hazards, aquaculture and food production, water traffic, heritage, protected areas, etc. Atlas will not only serve as a repository of knowledge but also as a work of art, combining meticulous research with artistic expression to engage a wide audience and foster a greater understanding of the region’s heritage, environmental challenges, and human impact on the landscape.
