The Centre of Archaeology at the University of Montenegro advances terrestrial and underwater cultural heritage through digital innovation and interdisciplinar

y archaeological research, from initial survey to public interpretation. Developing Cultural Heritage Projects

The Centre designs and carries out cultural heritage projects across terrestrial and maritime contexts, guiding each from initial concept through implementation, documentation, and dissemination. This includes the identification and assessment of heritage sites and assets, underwater and coastal heritage investigation, and the systematic digital documentation of cultural material using remote sensing, GIS, and HBIM. Interdisciplinary Method

Cultural heritage interpretation depends on expertise from multiple fields. The Centre integrates archaeology, geosciences, computer science, and conservation science throughout a project's lifecycle, ensuring that specialists contribute where their knowledge is most relevant, from initial site assessment to final documentation and public presentation. Making Heritage Accessible

The Centre translates archaeological interpretation into forms the public can engage with, making both terrestrial and underwater heritage accessible through exhibitions, digital reconstructions, and educational programs. This applies equally to sites on land and those beneath the sea, where physical access is often limited but public interest and value remain high. Accessibility is treated as a component of the research process, not a separate outreach activity. Institutional Context

Based within the Institute for Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Studies, the Centre builds partnerships with regional and international institutions to expand Montenegro's cultural heritage research capacity and contribute documented, interpreted heritage to the broader field of heritage studies.

Beneath the surface of our ocean, seas, rivers and lakes lies an extraordinary part of humanity's cultural heritage, from ancient shipwrecks and submerged settlements to archaeological sites and living traditions and knowledge connected to water.

Often unseen and difficult to access, this heritage bears witness to centuries of voyages, exchanges and shared histories. Yet it is increasingly vulnerable to looting, illicit trafficking, climate change, pollution and other growing pressures.

On 21 August, the first International Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage calls for stronger international cooperation to protect this irreplaceable source of knowledge and intercultural dialogue, and to ensure that its protection is fully integrated into the sustainable management of oceans, coastal areas and inland waters.

This year also marks 25 years since the adoption of UNESCO's 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage, which provides a framework for international cooperation, responsible research and the protection of submerged heritage from commercial exploitation and illicit trafficking.

Together with Member States, researchers, local communities and partners, UNESCO is working to safeguard for the benefit of humanity and future generations.

šŸ’” The project ā€œRoman Heritage in the Cross-Border Region – Connecting the Past and the Presentā€ (ROMANICA) is enhancing the protection, public accessibility, and presentation of Roman heritage in Montenegro, while strengthening the scientific research capacities of the Centre for Archaeology at the Institute for Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Studies of the University of Montenegro.

šŸŽ¤ ā€œStrengthening the infrastructure of the Centre for Archaeology represents an important step towards the long-term establishment of this field of research within the academic system of the University of Montenegro. The project has a dual impact. It enables the acquisition of modern equipment and the development of capacities for contemporary archaeological research and innovative cultural heritage interpretation, while also opening the Roman Baths in the Old Town of Budva to the public. This makes this valuable part of Budva’s and Montenegro’s cultural heritage accessible to citizens and tourists, 40 years after its discovery,ā€ said Kovačević.

The project is supported by Interreg IPA Croatia-Bosnia and Herzegovina-Montenegro.

šŸ¤Otvaranje rimskih termi u Starom gradu Budve pokazuje kako evropski fondovi mogu da doprinesu očuvanju, interpretaciji i približavanju kulturnog nasleđa građanima i posetiocima.
