ALC Ungheni
ALC Ungheni Branch- first results

The importance of English can not be denied and ignored since English is the most common language spoken everywhere. With the help of developing technology, English has been playing a major role in many sectors including medicine, engineering, and education, which, in my opinion, is the most important area where English is needed. Particularly, as a developing country, Moldova needs to make use of this world-wide spoken language in order to prove its international recognition. That is why teachers of English should provide the most efficient and modern methods of teaching English. English should be taught in Moldova for the following three reasons: finding a high-quality job, communicating with the international world, and accessing different sources in the entire world. From my experience, it is very good for students to study a sufficient amount of hours, especially for students who have never been to an English speaking society. The necessary amount of English classes will, of course, depend on the individual and our ALC classes can give a good opportunity to choose the most suitable number of hours and increase the knowledge of English. I am glad to say that the new branch of the American Language Center in Ungheni is finishing its first session of 64 hours in a week. To sum it up I can say that out of 40 students-36 students are successfully finishing their courses. Together with my assistant Irina Bucuci tried to use the newest methods and books recommended: “Face 2 Face”, “New Framework” and “Landmark”. There are 5 groups two Elementary, two Pre-Intermediate and one Intermediate group. We managed to use a lot of methods traditional and modern ones as: grammar-translation method, audio-lingual methods, the silent method. There are some other effective ways and techniques of teaching a foreign language that we successfully used during our classes (communicative teaching method; project method; the method of debates; games and role play). There is one more fact to mention about - the interesting and actual topics studied in the classes. That’s why our students are attending with great pleasure the ALC English classes. We hope to develop the Ungheni ALC branch increasing the number of groups and its quality. We came to the conclusion - studying English is very important and it is better to study a few more weeks, than to fail an important course later.

TOEFL® Tips
Use the English Language Every Day
Set aside time each day to communicate only in English. Listen, read, speak and write in English every chance you get.

Write
Send emails, make notes for yourself and write down daily reminders, using new words and common expressions. This helps with sentence structure and vocabulary.

Listen
Listen to music, online broadcasts, radio, television and movies in English. The more you listen, the more you will understand vocabulary and expressions. Music helps you acquire the rhythm and stress patterns of spoken English. Listen closely to the words.

Read
Reading is the best way to improve your vocabulary. English-language reading materials — newspapers, magazines, books and websites — are always available.

Speak
Concentrate on speaking loudly and clearly with good pronunciation and intonation. Try to speak in thought groups to have good flow to your speaking. Pause after prepositional phrases and related thought groups. Add emotion and feeling to what you are saying. Practice the same speech in your own language and then try to match the same gestures and feelings when you use English.

Keep a Journal
Write down things you are doing to prepare for college and other events in your daily life. This is a great way to organize your thoughts and practice writing in English. You can track your own progress. Read it to yourself and read it out loud.

Practice on a QWERTY Keyboard
A standard English language (QWERTY) computer keyboard is used for the test. Practice typing on a QWERTY keyboard to become familiar with the keys and layout.

Tips for Success on Test Day
Dress comfortably for any room temperature.
Eat a good breakfast.
Arrive at the test center at least 30 minutes early.
Follow directions carefully to avoid wasting time.
Do not panic. Concentrate on the task in front of you. Do not think about questions you have already answered.
Do not spend too much time on one question.
Do not leave questions blank. If you are not sure of the answer, make the best possible choice.
Pace yourself to answer every question and avoid rushing at the end.
