THE DOG ATE MY BOOK!

While you might have heard “my dog ate my homework” but would you believe?

One of the classic novelists of 20th century John Steinbeck (1902-1968) actually had to face such misfortune in 1936 by losing the first draft of his classic novella “Of Mice and Men” to his pup who ate it.

This event involved Steinbeck’s dog, Toby- an Irish setter pup who actually ate the first copy of John’s work in an evening when it was left alone. Unlike conventional travel writers who usually prefer working alone, Steinbeck preferred keeping company and somehow protection in the form of dogs.

However, having great admiration for his pet dog, Steinbeck took this incident in stride. He is said to be one of the greatest pet lovers in the world of literature. He spent a great portion of his life with dogs. His work is showered with quotes about dogs which depicts his love for this loyal being. Even after losing a huge proportion of work, Steinbeck didn’t take out his wrath on his pet and took the incident as fate.

It has been reported that the first manuscript of Mice and Men was originally titled “Something that happened” which reflects that some incidents happen to show us simply the way life is which ironically fits the scenario faced by Steinbeck when it came to the first copy of his globally acknowledged novella.

📚 WORDS:

to take (something) in stride - to deal with (something difficult or upsetting) in a calm way – принимать что-либо спокойно

to shower someone with something - to give someone a lot of presents or praise – осыпать

to take out his wrath on – to treat someone badly because you are upset or angry - выместить свой гнев на

❓ QUESTION:

Have you ever been in a similar situation?

She was the daughter of a wealthy Florentine banker, and her portrait—the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas—was probably commissioned about the time of her marriage at age 16. Leonardo himself was only about six years older.

Some features of Ginevra's portrait reveal young Leonardo as an innovator👨‍🎨.

🖌He placed her in an open setting at a time when women were still shown carefully sheltered within the walls of their family homes, with landscapes glimpsed only through open windows.
🖌The three–quarter pose, which shows her steady reserve, is among the first in Italian portraiture, for either s*x.

The vast majority of female portraits were commissioned on one of two occasions: betrothal or marriage. Wedding portraits tend to be made in pairs, with the woman on the right side. Since Ginevra faces right, this portrait is more likely to have commemorated her engagement. Her lack of obvious finery, however, is somewhat surprising. Jewels, luxurious brocades, and elaborate dresses were part of dowry exchanges and displayed a family’s wealth.

📚WORDS
betrothal - обручение, помолвка
finery - убранство
dowry - приданое

🍀Do you guys like the portrait of Ginevra? Why/Why not?

P.s. on the right is young Leonardo😎

This is Indra Devi , the first lady of yoga who lived up to 103 years! 🧘‍♀️

She paid a lot of attention to the consumption of WATER🍶. Here are some rules that she used to follow:

💧Do not drink iced water, especially for food, because it violates the natural circulation of gastric juices and prevents digestion. The habit of drinking iced water - this is an American national sin to healthy digestion.

💧Drink a glass of fresh, clean water at room temperature in the morning on an empty stomach and at night before bedtime. You can add a little lemon. Hot water or herbal tea with lemon or honey in a hot summer day is very refreshing and gives a feeling of coolness.

💧Drinking is from 5 to 8 glasses of water a day. Along with the air water is vital to us. Eight-tenths of our physical body is composed of water. On the day we allocate about 2,5 liters of water. Water scarcity is often caused by constipation and blockage of the line (colon) cancer, liver and kidney dysfunction, as well as obstruction of the intestines.

💧Do not drink water with meals, but half an hour before or 2-3 hours after a meal, so as not to disturb the digestive process by diluting the gastric juice.

💧Drink water in small sips rather than gulp.

📚WORDS
to allocate - выделять
scarcity - дефицит
intestine - кишечник

🍀How much water do you drink a day?

In a letter to fellow novelist Henry James wrote in 1913: ‘We must know, as much as possible, in our beautiful art . . . what we are talking about – & the only way to know it is to have lived & loved & cursed & floundered & enjoyed & suffered – I don’t think I regret a single “excess” of my responsive youth – I only regret, in my chilled age, certain occasions & possibilities I didn’t embrace.’

📚WORDS
to flounder - спотыкаться, делать ошибки
an excess - излишество
responsive- чувствительный

🍀Can you guys agree with Henry James?
