TOGKF! Goju-ryu!
Kumite, free sparring, and kata are often unrelated. In modern versions of traditional martial arts, kata movements are not used in sparring. Kata are performed independently, and when sparring begins, students use punches and kicks that are often not present in the kata at all. This sparring resembles poorly executed weekend boxing. This occurs for two reasons. First, the skill level of the movements is very low, as kata practice is limited to 20-30 minutes. Consequently, the understanding of kata is also low. The versions of movements that make up the basic bunkai are only the beginning of understanding the kata. They are intended solely for a better understanding of the kata movements themselves. The second problem is when instructors invent unusual-looking bunkai that completely fail to correspond to the patterns of movements mastered through kata practice. Thus, the dynamics of movement in kata are one thing, but the interpretation of these movements is completely different.
