"As a student at the University of Tampere in Finland, I was lucky enough to spend an Erasmus year in Leicester, UK, in 1995-1996, studying European politics.
Studying politics with students from across Europe – and the world – opened my eyes to the many differences in opinion and cultural diversity across Europe, but also to our many shared experiences. This is what is so valuable about Erasmus. It made it simple for me to live abroad, improve my English, and get to know people who lived 3,000 km from my hometown of Siilinjarvi. To me, this demonstrates the true value of the European Project.
Being part of the Erasmus generation – like so many other Europeans – inspired in me a passion for the European Union. It was this which encouraged me to first enter European politics, becoming Vice-President of the Youth of the European People’s Party in 1998, and eventually moving to Brussels to become a Commissioner, and now Vice-President.
Erasmus really changed my life, making me far more confident and opening my eyes to the importance of European integration, which is why I encourage all European students to take advantage of the incredible opportunity to live and study abroad."
