Researchers have been developing artificial neurons that can interact with real biological systems, and some recent work—published in journals like Nature Nanotechnology—does show promising progress.

These devices are designed to mimic how real neurons communicate using electrical signals. In laboratory settings, they’ve been able to stimulate activity in biological neurons (such as in animal tissue), which is an important step toward better brain–machine interfaces.

This connects to broader fields like Neuromorphic Computing and neuroprosthetics, where scientists aim to restore functions like movement, hearing, or vision by interfacing electronics with the nervous system.

The energy efficiency comparison between the brain and computers is broadly true, but using it to suggest an imminent shift in AI infrastructure is speculative.
